Subject: Zexel Torsen Diff?????

Message:
I am looking for a Zexel Torsen diff. for my 2001 QC. It has the 9 1/4 rear end I belive. Has anyone seen one advertised yet. If not does anyone know who is offering a Detroit Locker or Aurburn Gear set up? I was wounder what type of locking/limited slip design Dodge use as OEM? Thanks for all the info. I have seen the Torsen setup for GM,Ford, Toyota, Audi, BENZ, AM General HMV(Hummer) but nothing for Dodge? The Torsen design is all gear driven and is torque senseing not speed senseing. It transfers most of the power to the wheel with the most traction before it slips or spins. It allows full speed differential action for cornering and is seemless in use in a front or rear axle. This is also a hot setup on F1 cars. GM is useing this on the SSR. :):):)

It is basically a clutch set up with preload on the clutch plates. As the one wheel without as much traction spins the spider gears apply more force the the clutches making them apply harder. But the tire that is spinning has to have some traction or no force will be applied to the clutches. Not the best system in the world but works quite well for the daily driver. As long as it is supplied with the LSD lubricant it will last for many years. I will have to look up this Zexel Torsen diff that you are talking about.

It is great for daily driver and for road raceing. It is not very good for hard core off roading!

The Zexel torsen is an OK diff. They come in the late mode camaro/firebirds. Its all gears, no cutch packs to wear out. One real bad thing about them though, if the right wheel is in the air, the left gets no torque.

Get a lock-rite /detroite locker.

Ya, Joel it is a torq. biasing setup. It can send 2,3,5 times as much power to the wheel that has the most traction as compared to the one that is about to slip. The problem is that 2,3,5 x 0 = 0. This is why I said it is great for road raceing and daily driver but bad for hardcore off roading. The reason I like the Torsen unit is because it always allows full differiental action of the tires. I hate haveing to coast around corners to prevent hopping and axel bind. It also works before a whell slips and is transpartent. You have no idea that it is tranfering power from wheel to wheel. There is no loud noise like the detroit loccker and no clicking.... If you change the fluids as specified then it will last almost forever and performance does not degrade with use like clutch pack units. They also make one that has preload added. You always have to remember though that 2,3,5 x 0 still = 0. I agree that for off raoding it is hard to beat a detroit locker. The ARB is also great unit. What realy intrigued me about this setup was how fast it works and that it works before a tire slips. I also saw how cheap they where through GM. I would like to put one of these on my Dak. It is my family vechile and my wife often drive this by herself. I would rather not have to ask her to change her driveing style. If I install a detroit locker she would have to learn to drive differntly! Thanks for the advice !!!!!
