Just bought a used(24kmi)2000 Dakota Sport 4.7 and it seems there is a slight ammount of free play in the steering wheel. Not much, definately less than 1/4 inch. Is this normal?

I think it would be normall. But I think that there is a way to adjust the free play, but not sure. Maybe someone else would know?

While on a 18 inch steering wheel to pass inspection in Pa you are only aloud two inches of slop. There is some amount of freeplay in all steering systems but you could check your tie rods and pitman arm for freeplay by grabbing ahold of them and pulling them up and down. They shouldnt move much. Steering boxes can be adjusted I believe but most mechanics wont do it unless its a necessity because of the time involved.

4x4 or not? 4x4s have more play and are more vague due to taller tires.

Pete I would not worry about 1/4" play in your steering wheel that is definately not excessive.

my 98' 4x4 has some freeplay that seems excessive (definitely more than it had new), the Tie Rods, and pitman arm are ok, the freeplay is definitely in the Box (ie movement at the top going in, no movement at the bottom coming out). I've got 1/4 to 1/2" of slop in the steering, Ive found the adjustment on the Steerging Box/Gear,and know "Generally" what your supposed to do to make the adjustment. Is this recommended as a Do-It-Yourself task, or is there a high potential for FUBAR here? ie even the dealers dont like doing it?
