Subject: Ball Joints??? IP: Logged
Message: As I'm pulling into uhh.... lets say a gas station, and I've got the wheel cranked to the left (I don't know if it does it on the right side) but I hear this clicking sound, (sounds like metal rubbing metal), would this be my ball joints goin bad? It's a 2002 with 6,300 miles and I'd say about 90% is all highway miles. I do my own oil changes (3 so far) and I haven't seen any grease fittings. Don't tell me I'm gonna have to replace these things every 6,000 miles or so?

Message: If it's a 4wd, check to make sure the CV Joint's boot is intact. It may have been cut and spewed out all if it's grease (happened to me right after replacing them on my grand prix, yay warrentee!)

Message: Clevite77, you should do a search on this site. There are a lot of good posts with info on ball joints. I had to replace my uppers and lowers at 50,000 kilometres. Chrysler will NOT sell just the ball joints, you have to buy the whole assembly, which they quoted $1200 Canadian for parts alone. And of course, they are the same crappy parts, with no grease fittings, what is the point of paying all that and having to do it again in a couple of years? I took it to an excellent shop and had them put Moog ball joints in, upper and lower. They did a great job, and it cost me $770 for parts and labour. These are really good ball joints, and have grease fittings.

Message: I don't know if its the same on the Dakota, but my Pathfinder does the same thing and its because of something called a "steering stop". From the factory, the stop has a plastic cap which apparently is lost fairly quickly. Without it, if you have the steering fully cranked to one side or the other and flex the suspension (such as when driving over a curb, etc), then you will hear the metal-on-metal grinding like you describe. At least on the Pathfinder, there are some aftermarket solutions available... or you could do as I do and just not worry about it.

Message: Ball Joints for '00+ are only available threw Mopar. No one makes aftermarket ones.. Trust me I've called EVERYONE! You have to buy the uper Control Arm to replac the uper Ball Joints ~$180 per side.. and the lowers you can replace those I'm not sure on that price for Mopar but if you go to NAPA you can get them for ~$50 per side.
Mopar Upper A-Arms w/ Ball Joints = ~$180
NAPA Lower Ball Joints #104151 they are made by Master Ride = ~$50
