Message: I respect your right not to like me. I think it is rather hard to "hate" someone over something as simple and fun as this board. I am always trying to help if I can with general mechanical questions. I also tell it exactly as I see it. I love helping people. If I have offended you in some way I apoligize for offending you. If you are easily offend by conflicting opions I would recomend that you take your heart off you sleeve and put it in a safe place before you come to this site. I have had alot of people disagree with my advice over the years. I keep comeing back though. If I come on strong sometimes it is because I hate to see dis-information and old wives tales spread like wild fire. This site is never personal for me. CW and Bernd have corrected me a couple of times and I am glad that they did. They know alot more about DC products then I do and I love learning as much as teaching. See ya!! I hope you are less bitter after reading my post.

Message: Negative on Dodge's...I have been negative on Dodge's for the past 20 something years. It wasn't until until a couple years ago that I started considering a Dodge. Dakota to be excact.
The reason I need a "small size" truck is b/c I use a wheelchair and can get in and out easily. For the past 13 years I used an S-10 and then a Sonoma. Over 100,00 miles on the S-10 4.3 with NO problems. At 86,000 miles I gave the Sonoma 4.3 to my son and never had to fix anything. No rotors, ball joints, funny noises, ect.
My last Dodge was a red Dodge Power Wagon 4x4 in the late 70's. It was a good fun truck.
The best cars I've had were Datsons and Nissans Z-cars. Over 200,000 miles on these things was the norm.
The Dakota is great with plenty of power compared to small GM trucks. I just hope it gives me the satisfaction of NOT having to work on it.

Message: Well, I say these things so people that have never owned anything other then domestic have an idea of what the competition is doing. I have said plenty of good things about my 2001 Dak QC. I realy like driveing it! With that said, I also compare it to all the vechiles I have ever owned or worked on. If you can not see the short comeing of a given vechile design you are either blind or in denial!!! All vechiles have some short comeing. I was ASE certifed and have worked on mostly imports. I currently work for a large domestic auto manufacture. I see all the short comeings and failures everyday( about 170 falures per-day)!!So I am going to compare this Dak to what I am familar with. It is not my fualt that most Dakotas can not go longer then 12,000 miles with out warping their rotors! It is not my fualt that so many 4.7 have a stalling problem! It is not my fualt that the box is not straight!Seeing how I bought a Dak I think that gives me just as much right as anyone else that owns one to complain about it's short comeings. I bought my Dakota becuase I got a good deal on it. I do not need to think that it is the best truck ever built to like it and enjoy it. If we do not complain to DC about their vechiles short comeing we will not get improvments. I know people that think it is normal to go through 3 sets of rotors and pads in 36,000 miles. Their is nothing normal about this. I had a gentel man ask me at work why his engine is worn out at 100,000 miles. The failure of parts is designed in. You can predict the number of hours a part will last before failure pretty closely. Our countrys economy is based on private vechile ownership. They want you to buy a new car within 5 years of purchase. Most domestic vechiles are sold or traded at about the 3 year mark and vechiles older then 5 years old general have had engine's or transmisson's or major power train parts overhualed or replace due to failure. Have you noticed that it is not possable to get a loan for longer then 60 months??? That nuber was picked based on statical figures about failure rates of major parts v.s warranty perods. In Germany it is not unuasly to see loan periods of 8-11 years. Some imports are designed with a 14 year life cycle between major overhauls under sever duty use.If a part fail under warranty one of two things happened. Either the person that designed the part was incompetant or the company tried to make it to cheaply and cut some corners causeing the failure. This is assumeing that the company has some form of quality control. It only cost's a few cents more to double the life of a matalic part. Most times more extensive heat treatment and better quality controls over the steel used are all that is required. The auto industry make more money selling parts to consumer then they ever have off of the purchase of the cars themselfs. It is in the best interest of the manufacture, dealership, and suppliers to make part only as durable as the consumer and warranty demands!!!!!!

Message: Well for one thing you can get loans for a period over 60 months and secondly it has nothing to do with how long the vehicle will last. The banks want to get their money back as fast as possible and don't want to run the risk of having loans on vehicles that insurance don't want to pay for if they are damaged. Our cars lose their value very quickly because of the high turnover. We are a species that gets bored very quickly of our new shiny object and can't wait till the next new shiny object comes along. Yes our vehicles do seem to wear out quickly, why? I'm not exactly sure. For the most part americans are very abusive and demanding when it comes to our cars. The germans make great rides, you think an american car would stand a chance on the autobahn day in and day out? I hardly doubt it, truth is it dosn't have to. Everyone talks about ricers and just how refined they are, sure they are great. Where exactly do you think they are built? You can also bet that americans played a part in how they are built also. I know this is long but this is my last point. We are a free people and are able to buy and spend as we wish. In these other countries owning a car for the most part is a priveledge that only select ones get to take part in. My point? Domestic car companies have to pump out so many, that they have to cut corners somewhere. I know that we suffer for this but all in all we have great cars and trucks. If it weren't for americans do you really think toyota would be running v8's now?

Message: Sandman: Daks have faults just like the toys do. Do you like having you shortcomings always pointed out by the same person over and over again. If you don't have anything good to say don't say anything at all. My Aunt buys nothing but Toyotas and I have yet to see one make it more than about 5 years before rust starts to show its evil head. TOYOTAS RUST!!!! Her last one cost her quite a bit of money before 120,000 mile mark.

Message: Hey Leslie, nice wheels!
Sandman, you sound like me, I like my dakota, but my world doesnt revolve around it.
I wish I could find a general automotive discussion board without all the Mopar bias. Have looked but no luck so far.
I love all types of cars and trucks, Import and Domestic. I'm not narrowminded enough to
limit myself to one type of vehicle when there is so much to choose from out there.

Message: Ya Chris W. I figure someone has to be the voice of reason(sp) or the devil's advocate depending on what who is reading this post! I know Toys have fualts as well. I am on a quest for durability, performance, build quality and value. So far I have gotten value and performance out of my Dakota. I am very hopeful that I will also get durability out of my Dakota. Dodge already droped the ball on build quality. It sure looks pretty when it is clean though.

I've got 123,000 on a 95 3.9, still runs good, but damn, the money i've had to dump into it.
Still get compliments on it though. Keep on playing Devils advocate. thats what keeps everyone from becoming blind sheep.

Message: I might only be a porter... but I work at Toyota and the quality is not all its cracked up to be. I am the one who drives the various broken cars. From broken door handles to locked up a/c compressors... I see it all. We just got through with our 4th New camry with an engine lock up. The cylinder literally obliterated the head by smashing into it on this guys family vacation. He thought he had a dead battery. d@mn the luck. Now note this, I'm not saying these cars are bad cars, but they aren't perfect either. I just get sick of everyone comparing Dodge's lack of quality to Toyotas great quality.

But youre right, every make does have its problems.
It has always amazed me how quick people will jump to the defense of a certain vehicle. I guess we Americans are truly passionate about our vehicles. :-}
