This problem just showed up all of a sudden. When I step on the brake and come close to stopping (around 5 mph) it starts the shudder and jump. sometimes after I stop it will either stop or stall. this happend everytime I brake. any help would be greatly appreciated, this problem is really bothering me because its not very reliable.

First thing I'd have checked is tranny-sounds like it is remaining engaged as you're stopping and you're stalling the engine with your brakes.

If you have a manual, try pressing in on the clutch :)

Have the torque converter checked to make sure it's coming out of lock.

I dont think that this will have anything to do with it, but I changed the gauge cluster and once i got the new one in thats when it started doing it. I had to change a few pins around but i really dont think that it would cauze anything like i'm experiencing. I just picked up a new tranny filter kit and fluid and am going to change it tonight. Another few bits of info, my truck is an 88,automatic, v6. when i put it in just 1st and stop its fine, when I put it in 2nd, it goes into first and then into second fine and when I stop it down shifts fine too with no problem. However when I put it in drive and get up to about 20 Mph and then brake, it starts to buck and stalls out.
I'll definately check the tranny and give the torque converter a check as well. I hope one of these things is the culprit cauze its a little to cold to go putting a new transmission in.

Try checking the vaccum booster it may be leaking causing the motor to stumble. Just a thought

Found the problem!!
this was the last thing I would have expected. the last time I used my emergency brake the left wheel cable broke in the semi-on position. since it was partially depressed, driving and stopping at higher speeds was no problem but as soon as I got down to almost stopping it would start to grab and lock up before the enging could downshift. needless to say I spent 20 bucks on a new cable and problem solved. atleast my tranny got a fluid change out of the whole deal, I porbally would nopt have done it for another 10,000 miles if this had not have happened :)
