Subject: Can Dealer Install Tranny Cooler?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just bought an `02 Quad cab 4.7l SLT 4sp auto - expecting delivery on 3/29. Unfortunately it won't have the heavy duty service pkg that comes with the tranny cooler that I really wanted. Question; Is it possible to have a local Dodge dealer install the factory transmission cooler after I take delivery?

The reason why I'm asking if the dealer can do this is because I don't want to install an aftermarket cooler myself and find out later that by doing so, I somehow voided my warranty. You know how that goes.

Please advise.

-Gary

The dealer can definately install the cooler for you and it will be covered under warranty just like the rest of your truck.

I posted on here a couple days ago about this. I have an 01 quad cab and wanted a tranny cooler installed. Called the dealer and was told all new Dakotas come equipped with a cooler as standard equipment.

LEWNDI,

Interesting. What's the difference between the HD Service group transmission cooler and the one that comes standard? Capacity?

While we're on the topic of dealer installs, can, or should I say will the dealer install the radio controls for the steering wheel. I have the required infinity radio. it's a 2002

The "standard" cooler is built into the radiator, not very efficient. Go to the dealer and have him install the HD cooler which is mounted in front of the radiator. The external one cooles more and is in line with the standard one in the radiator so you get a lot of cooling. The dealer may also be able to install an inline filter (spins on like an oil filter). This is good if you do a lot of towing. You can change out this filter every 5000 miles if you tow a lot, and drop the pan and change the fluid every 15000-20000 miles.

Now that you have said this you have piqued my interest. If I raise my hood there is a black thin(about 1 inch} radiator in the very front. I already assumed this to be the tranny cooler but is this the HD one? If so then why didn't I get a hitch also if it was part of the tow group? I'm assuming you would only get the tranny cooler with the tow group. I am probably way off on this but am interested in knowing the dilio!

My truck is being serviced today. otherwise I'd go outside and take a picture so you can compare. In lieu of that, here's my description of the drawing in the factory service manual.

Three cooling devices up front: radiator, transmission cooler, and A/C condenser. Radiator is the largest one closest to the engine. The transmission cooler is the smallest one that's positioned furthest forward down low, and is about 1/4 the size of the radiator. The AC condenser should sit inbetween those and be larger than the transmission cooler.

When I get my truck back I'll post a pic of it...I've got the HD package so I know the transmission cooler is on there.

I just looked under the hood. There's the main rad, then another rad in front of it thats almost the same size. There's one line comes off the smaller one to the a/c compressor, and another line goes thru the firewall so I assume that's the a/c condensor. There's only these two rads so maybe the dealer was wrong when he said all trucks come equipped with a tranny cooler. Maybe I have to purchase one after all.

All automatic trucks come with a tranny cooler. Its intergrated into the rad.

What you want is a cooler additional to that one. I suggest the B&M trans cooler. I just installed one in my chevy after finding out which cooler is the top of the line.
When installing, you tap into the trans oil return line from the rad and that already somewhat cooled fluid flows to the B&M supercooler (or any other) for even more cooling, then it goes to the trans.

On a Dakota/Durango, which line coming out of the radiator is the return line? I have an '03 Durango and want to add the B&M cooler but don't know which line to tap. Also, I was told to try to find a space NOT in front of the radiator but I don't think there is any space anywhere else?

Any ideas?

thanks,

Adam

Adam, I can't recall which line was the return line, but I think it was the bottom line when I installed my cooler.

You want the trans cooler in front of the radiator so the cooler gets ram air at highway speeds and air flow from the fan(s) at low speeds or stopped. If the cooler isn't in front of the radiator, it's not going to get any air flow when stopped. This would kill a tranny in stop and go traffic on a hot day.

DSw,
I just added the B&M tranny cooler to my 2000 QC. You might really think twice about doing that. I will most likely change it to an engine oil cooler with a remote oil filter. There are 2 MAJOR concerns you need to take into consideration. 1.) Because the transmission fluid will take longer to heat up, the tranny will shift harder; even to the point in causes the engine to die. So take time to warm the car up before driver. 2.) Adding an additional cooler will lower the fluid pressure in the transmission lines; which causes slower shifting and a humming noise in the tranny immediately after shifting.

GDArmas, Did you get tranny problems after installing your cooler?

I'v had mine installed for 1-2 years and never suffered any ill effects from the cooler. The HD Service Group or tow package (well one of these) for the Daks has an secondary cooler like the one I installed up in front of the AC condensor. If secondary tranny coolers caused tranny shifting problems Dodge wouldn't put them on the trucks. My cooler is the stacked plate design which is supposed to be a low restriction design and I am running Amsoil ATF, not a problem or regret from installing the cooler and/or Amsoil ATF.

If your getting tranny problems after installing a cooler I would look into the problem further, kinked/restricted line or blocked cooler. If the new cooler can't flow enough fluid it you could do damage to the tranny.

I just installed the B&M cooler last weekend, and been having unusual side effects. I don't believe there's any kinks, it's plumbed with hard line.

I am strongly considering switching it to an oil cooler. I have the tow package installed and this would have been a third cooler for the transmission; (I to am over protective of my tranny). I also use synth oil (redline).

I just had a shop install a trans cooler on my 99 5.2 and now my Dak is acting funny. I was driving last night, came to a stop light and tried to accelerate and my Dak wouldn't go! I had to really step on the gas to get it going. Then this morning I drove about 20 miles and my overdrive off light came on all by itself!!! So now I'm taking it back in to get it removed...any other thoughts on what might have happened???

Find out what I.D. size hosed they used; I used hard lines thoughout the whole system, except where I spliced into the lines. Depending on where you mount it, you also might want to make sure they put the auxiliary cooler in front of the factory one. Email me and I'll send you pics of my system.
