Subject: Exaust leak IP: Logged
Message: Is it common for late model 3.9's (mine's a 1999)to develop an exaust leak at one of the manifolds or at the collector gasket?? Mine just started to leak at around 49,000 miles when the engine is cold. It seems to go away once warmed up. When its leaking, i can hear an fast "pist, pist, pist, pist" noise on acceleration, under the hood. If it is indeed an exaust manifold gasket, i might as well put a set of headers on.

Message: What country ? Get the headers if that's what you really want, but if U.S. you are still covered by federal emissions warranty.

Message: It happened to me too. I have a '97 3.9L and it had been getting a ticking noise at start ups. So i took it in, and the guy told me it was an exhaust manifold leak. It was covered in my warranty, but when i purchased it i got an upgrade in the warranty so i don't know if it is included in the normal warranty. After it was replaced it ran all quiet again. The guy had to order new gaskets and all that other junk with the manifold.
hope this helps

Message: Pollution stuff is covered by this warranty - that includes anything upstream from the cat - but not after it (muffler, tailpipe, etc.). Also includes things like vapor canisters and smog pumps but not wear items like spark plugs or air filters. Had a cracked Y-pipe covered this way once at over 70,000. Confirm this with the dealer before you authorize service to avoid any problems. It was actually a dealer who clued me into this for the Y-pipe.

Message: Tighten them bolts up at the manifold (when it's cold of course). I have 44,000 on mine -- had to do it about 10K back. The damned things came that way from the factory -- my initial discovery was made about 200 miles into the odometer. Brought it in, they tightened up the bolts -- good to go. Lasted 30K miles until "Tightening 2.0" had to occur. Good luck my friend - Jim

Message: I was changing my oil this afternoon and thought i noticed black carbon stains at the connection between right side manifold and Y-pipe. Going to check tomorrow with a spot light to confirm this......god , i don't want to go to the dealer again....i'm sure they will do everything they can to not acknowledge there is a problem....i hate dodge dealers....

Message: Also, it will only make that leaking sound when in gear and accelerating. It won't do it at all in park while reving it a bit. I think its gotta be that connection from manifold to Y-pipe...being in gear and accelerating moves the engine enough to open up that leak (till its warmed up and expanded, then it doesn't leak anymore).....sound plausible??

Message: for the guy who sais the leak goes away when the motor heats up, it's one or more of the exaust manifold bolts has loosened and may or may not have damaged the gasket. probably not . check to see if they are all still tight before you bring it to the dealer trust me on this one
