Message: My Dakota is running weird. Whenever I try to go up a hill or step on it a little, it doesn't have any get up and go to it. Then when I back off the throttle I can hear the engine hesitating and missing, then clear out. Whats going on? I loose speed a lot up hills, down to 15 mph sometimes! It only seems to do this when the engine is at a lower rpm too. Then if I put it into 2nd or 1st, it will clear up and do fine. any suggestions to check? Thanks-Nick

Message: Had a flatbed that ran like that. They ended up rebuilding the carb and giving it a tune up.

Message: Years ago I had an older truck (import) and it started doing the same. It would studder going up hill and soon it started to hesitate all the time. Ended up replacing the fuel filter and bingo the problem was gone.

Message: I used to own a Toyota that did a somewhat similar thing...mine would stumble really bad (and sometimes die) at light throttle. Heavy throttle and high RPMs were no problem, but the car was down on power. The Toyota dealer diagnosed it as excessive carbon build-up on the intake valves that was "soaking up" most of the available gas, caused by years of using cheap gas. Cure on mine was to hand-rotate the engine until an intake valve was closed, blast it with crushed walnut shells, then move on to the next one until all valves had been blasted. $300 later, the problem was solved. The dealer highly encouraged me to run nothing but Chevron gas, and to periodically use a bottle of Techron additive. Several vehicles and many hundreds of thousands of miles later using only Chevron gas and an occasional Techron treatment, I have never had that problem again.

Message: Crushed walnut shells? You did that with the heads on the engine? Kind of confused about that statement.

Message: Crushed walnut shells. Sounded crazy to me too when the mechanic described it, but it worked. They were able to do it without removing the head, just the carb and intake manifold. Then by rotating the engine by hand until the intake valves were closed for 1 cylinder, they were able to blast the crushed walnut shells through the intake port onto the valves to loosen the crud. Then they flushed it and vacuumed the whole mess out, and moved onto the next cylinder. In a nutshell (so to speak), it was the best way to get the most gunk off the valves. Any residual crud that was left could then be slowly cleaned out by using Chevron gas (which contains Techron), plus a bottle of Techron every few months. But I would still check all the things that Bill K mentioned a few posts ago. If after doing all that there is no improvement, I would definitely try a bottle of Techron in each of your next few gas fill-ups to see if that helps. To check to see if it is crud built up on your valves, you might try to find a mechanic in the area that has a tiny camera on a probe that can be pushed through the intake manifold (or ports if you have to remove the manifold). That would at least eliminate one possibility.

Message: Sounds like some kind of vacume leak. Maybe a small crack in one of your vacume lines or a little worse, a blowed intake gasket. Could be alot of the things already mentioned. Jus my 2cents. Good luck!

Message: Try putting is a quart of Murphys Mystery Oil in with an oil change. Run is about 500 miles and then change the oil. You will pull out so much crap it is unbelievable. I did that series twice and it made a huge difference. Just don't leave the oil in a full 3000 miles.
Just a thought.

Message: mines doing the same thing. i have a 1996 with the 5.2 V8. I'll be sitting at a stop light and it'll be spitting and sputtering. All I have to do is rest my foot on the gas and it's okay for a second. When I accelerate it hesitates real bad, but like you say, when I hit a certain RPM it takes off and is fine. I'm open to suggestions too and if I hear anything or find out what's wrong with it, I'll let you know. Good luck.

Message: I have a 1990 Dakota somewhat intermitant but recently getting worse. it runs rough at an idle. It studeers real bad (as if starving for gas on an empty tank) ussualy at lower rpm's. it will run ok if I drop down one or sometimes even two gears and floor it. fuel aditives have not helped, save one exception, a drier and octane boost seemed to cut the studder by about half. curious though, it did not start happening until I filled the tank with chevron gas which I never use! I always use 76 gas. now two months into this, I have replaced the fuel filter and checked plugs and wires. 3 shops (including two dodge dealers)have been unable to identify the problem! I am already out several hundred dollars and no better off than when I started! I will try the walnut shell trick. I hope it works. thanks.
