Message: OK. The way it was explained to me was that for 1 single tire rotation, your engine turned 3.55 times. (I think?!?) So if you want to move faster or tow more, switch out your gears to a 3.92 or a 4.10. Now keep in mind...I may be talking outta my a$$ and not even have a clue what I am talkin' bout. But I think I am right here.
Good Luck!!

Message: pyrodak is correct,so if you go with higher numbers in gears the ratio becomes lwr resulting in a higher rpm for motor at all speeds, the 3;55 are good for hi way cruising and pretty good perf. the 3;92 are lwr ratio resulting in more gas consumption, but better perf. and better towing capability. The saying is 3;55 is the all around perfect ratio.

Message: Here is how gear numbers work.
The higher the number, the lower the gear ration.
Therefore, 4.10 is a lower gear ratio than 3.55.
A 4.10 gear will make a truck quicker from the start, but will require higher RPMs at a given speed, compared to a 3.55. The explanation above was correct, one tire ratation is equal to 3.55 engine rotations with 3.55 gears (when the tranny is at the one to one ratio gear, usually 4th for a 5-speed or 3rd for the auto). A better way to say it is that the driveshaft turned 3.55 times when the wheel turned once.
SO , the higher 3.55 gears will give you better highway cruising (lower rpm) and slightly better gas mileage on the highway. You won't be as quick in a drag race, and you will feel like your truck has less power than if it had lower gears. A lower gear (higher number) is more useful for towing or quick starts off the line.
Basically, 3.55 and 3.92 ratios that come in the newer Daks are good all around ratios, 4.10 gears are more for drag racing or serious off-roading (or to compensate for big tires), and 3.23 gears (older Daks? not sure) are a little better for highway cruising.
Hope that helped!!

Message: Sorry kevster but pyrodak is wrong-CLOSE- but no cigar. For every full rotation of the tire, the DRIVESHAFT would turn 3.55 times. With overdrive tranny the shaft turns faster than the motor.
