Subject: Valve seal question IP: Logged
Message: I suspect the valve seals on my '91 5.2 are shot. I get smoke out the tail pipe at start up and also while I'm driving sometimes.
Question - would bad valve seals cause smoke while driving or just at start up?
I've got 140k miles on the truck.
Please let me know. I'm ready to replace the valve seals but don't want to do it if it wont solve the problem.

Message: Most of the time with worn valve seals the engine will only smoke at start up, burning the oil that has leaked thru overnight. It doesn't hurt a thing and you could drive it for years like that. If it smokes while driving well that's a different story. With as many miles as you have you might need a rebuild.

Message: Tell me it isn't so! I'm trying not to spend a fortune on the truck as I'd like to get rid of it soon.
Valve seals I can handle. So I am hoping that is the problem (or at least the bulk of it).
What else could it be? Rings or head gaskets would be my next guess. Is there an easy way to find out or do I need to do a compression check?
