Message: I have a 4.3L 1992 gmc sonnoma. I own a lawn care business and am looking at upgrading to a bigger better trailer. I will be towing this trailer with about 1000-1500 lbs. of stuff 4-5 days a week. How much weight do you think my truck can safley pull on a regular basis?

Message: Again, check your owner's manual.
The closer you come to the maximum rating, the more you're going to stress your drivetrain and the shorter the life of your rig will be.
Also keep in mind that stopping distances, especially in town, are going to become critical. All of us tend to drive more closely in town than is prudent and stopping with a loaded trailer can become rather exciting. Electric or surge brakes should be requisite.
The GMC service guys will be able to provide the MAX towing information, but keep the caveats aformentioned in mind and expect everyone around you is trying to kill you by car,...D

Message: Not a clue. Maybe if you posted on a GMC Sonoma board you would get a better answer. Mostly, you have Dodge experts here. We could guess on the answer or give you general towing tips, but that doesn't help answer your question.

Message: Look on Chevy.com under the the s-10 and you can find the tow capacity for the cmparable 4.3 motor. Its alomost the same as the 3.7 Dakota. Somawhere near 5000 lbs depending on the rearend. The 4.7 Dakota goes to about 6300 with a 3.92, but thats very conservative. The same 4.7 with the 5 spd auto and 3.92 in the Ram truck goes to about 7300lbs. A 4.8 Silverado with less torque and a 3.73 Auto rates at 8000 or better. Go figure?

Message: Towing incorperates much more than just power. BRAKING is key as well. Most of the time the towing capacity is dependant on the vehile weight (braking) and suspension just as much as it is set by looking at the power..

Message: With good trailer brakes that shouldn't be a real factor. Those other trucks I mentioned are only about 500 pounds heavier than the Dak. I replaced a Chevy 350 5spd with my mine. The Chevy would slide all over the place and my Dak won't under hard brakeing with a load. That Chevy weighed 5800 lbs too. It wasn't the new Chevy light pickup. Needless to say I'm real impressed with the Dakota. Mine is an AWD, 3.92 with all the heavy duty stuff and the handling package.

Message: It's much higher than what the newer Colorodo is. I think its rated at only 2 tons. Your 170 HP 260 V8 in your GMC should easly pull 1500 pounds.
My V6 makes childs play with my 3200 lb camper.

Message: I've had 2 Chevy S10's in the past. A 1981 and a 1987.
Both had smaller engines than yours(2.3L and 2.5L I think) and were rated for 3500lbs with a hitch.
The bumper was only rated for 1000lb though.
As far as I know the only S10/Sonoma that couldn't pull at least 3500lb is the Cyclone.
That short lived hot rod pick-up that came in any color you wanted as long as it was black was limited to 500lb.
Again, check your owners manual to be sure.

Message: This is the first time I have posted... not sure if I am suposed to follow this post or make a new one... or if I am even allowed because I have a Ram 1500 (not a Dak).
I have a 98 Quad Cab, the towing information says that maximum trailer weight should be 7700lbs, I just ran across a killer deal on a new 26ft Fifth Wheel with a goose neck hitch. The problem is the beast weighs 9700lbs. Is there a SAFE way I can increase the capacity of my equipment to pull the 9700lb 5th wheel trailer?
I know Cuda's... not trucks...

Message: NO! Two Thousand over on the trailer plus normal people and gear will kill your truck quick. You can get away with overloading for short hauls, but not for any distance without undesired side effects. YOu looking at 25% overload, not good.
