I noticed the same thing. Then just out of curiosity I ran the "build your own" thing off the dodge website. I found that the only way I could "build" an R/T was on a regular cab sport. Strange.

I have a feeling not too many people are buying R/T's so they don't include em in the new lineup. But at the dealership I was lookin through the new Dakota brochure and they list the R/T in the pics of all the trucks.

The R/T lacks one important option...

A Manual Transmission.

I mean, come on! It's supposed to be the top of the line -sport- truck? With an automatic? I wouldn't buy it.

Yeh, whats with no manual for the R/T, and the Buick Grand Nationals, the Ford Lightning, all the current AMG mercedes (at least in the US), The Jaguar XJR, and XKR, all the supercharged Buicks and Pontiacs, the Audi S8, and many more. Most all of these cars would be considered the top of the line models for the makes and they all have automatics. Did you know only 11% of the vehicles sold in the US have a manual transmission? It doesn't seem like such a big risk for Dodge to take. Especially considering they don't have a manual transmission that will fit in the Dakota nad handle the 360's torque. I'm just glad they had the balls to actually put the 360 in there in the first place. I lived with a 5.2 Dakota a long time wondering why they didn't drop the basically indentical 5.9 in there. Then I only had to look over at what Ford and Chevy had to know not to look a gift horse in the mouth. When the 5.7 gets to the next Dakota I too hope they end up with that newly designed 5-speed to go with it, at least it will have a good set of gear ratios in it built for acceleration, and no granny 1st. But for right now there is now way they are going to massage the Dakota to fit a NV-4500 in there for the last year of production, and you wouldn't want that transmission for a drag race anyway.

I know this isnt going to make any sense being that all top sport cars and trux have manuals, but I remember being at the dodge and chevy dealers and asked them both the same question and they both said something about the engines being too strong for a manual??? I know, sounds retarded, just passin it on...not saying I believe evrything that comes out of a salesmans mouth either

I would agree that the top sports cars have manuals but certainly not the top sport trucks. The R/T, Lightning, and 454 SS were all automatics. Even Hot Rod magazines new 528 Hemi Ram, with 610 naturally aspirated HP, is a automatic, "we went with the torqueflight because it has proven to be bullitproof behind the old musclecars". It is true in the Dakota case that the manual isn't strong enough for the 360, it is only built so the toughest manual it can get is the NV-3500 which according the the builders is about 35 ft-lbs of torque shy of being able to handle a stock 360 let alone one with a few simple mods. That said, if a strong 5speed manual with performance (not granny) gears was available for the R/T I would have certainly got that option.

There is some truth to that.

An automatic is usually has planetary gear set that has three contact points to distribute the torque through, where as a manual typically has only one.

However notice that the badboy Cummins comes with the NV5600 6 speed manual. Which (IMO) shifts much easier and smoother than my NV3500. Downside? It's friggin huge! The cast iron case itself is 350Lbs (vs. the 110Lbs for the NV3500's aluminum case).

Though for the life of me I can't see a reason not to plant a T-56 in the R/T Dak (it's in the Viper and GM F-bodies). My god a T-56 in a Dak would be nice...

Basically it's a deal of they want to shift the sporty car/truck market to other segments and leave the Dakotas alone. Though I would live to see at least a 4.7HO R/T.

Love my 5spd also:-)

The 5.9 is about 30 more ft/.bs of torque than the 4.7, right? %age wise, not that much.

Now my slightly moded 4.7L 5spd probably comes close to this anyway. It's hard to believe that that small of a %age would make the difference.

From what I've seen on posts on the auto's in DAKs, doesn't seem like the auto is much good either.

But, now with this auto and driveshaft thingy, (Coming apart at high speeds), don't know how much R&D Dodge really uses anyway.
