Subject: why is my truck overheating????
IP: Logged

Message:
I posted this on moparchat also but i figured id ask your opinion also.... ive got a 96 3.9 dakota, it has been overheating , but what it does is ..the temp guage will start to rise ..then right before im ready to shut it off and pull over , the guage flies back down to the cool side. it only does it once or twice ,then its fine, and it only seems to happen when i first start driving. also .. when the temp goes up i loose all heat in my truck. i was told it may be an air pocket in my cooling, i changed the thermostat and it did nothing. what do you guys think???????

If your heater is not putting out warm air, there is no hot water in the heater. So it sounds like you have air in the system, check your cap to make sure it is working properly. It is suppose to vent excess water to the overflow tank as the engine warms up, and when you shut off the engine and it cools off, it sucks some back to keep the radiator full.

If you have a 96 Dak and never replaced the radiator cap, now is time to do it, and make sure you bleed air from system. and if you have electric fan? does it come on, is the clutch fan operating correctly?

My truck a 96 Dodge Dakota overheated once and right after I checked the oil and put some in. Also added coolant to the engine and water and it overheated again. It was doing good until I started to drive and the thermostat rose really fast. What is wrong with it and what should I have checked?

We had a somewhat similiar problem. The Temperature guage was swinging between 1/3 & 2/3. Someone on this board suggested getting a 180 degree Robert Shaw thermostat. Don't recall the part number. It's suppose to fail in the open mode as I recall.

Before starting your cold engine.
Remove the radiator cap.
Start the engine.
Let it run until you can see the water circulating and get hot.
Turn the heater on high.
If the water level drops, add water.

I hope this helps.

How many miles are on the truck? It could be the radiator itself. They only last so long. If you've got anywhere near 100k on the clock it could be that the radiator needs to be boild/rodded and cleaned.

Also, check the heater core. If it's not working properly it can cause the symptoms you're describing.

Also, check ALL hoses, connections. If a hose is soft and bulging under pressure, it can create backpressure within the flow of water. In other words, the coolant isn't flowing through the system with the required amount of volume.

Again, if any of you have high mileage vehicles, these are the things that will begin to go wrong FIRST! Any vehicle, I don't care who makes it, if it's got anywhere near 100,000 miles on it, the cooling systems should be seriously overhauled. Doesn't cost that much, and can truly spare you a lot of headaches!

Good luck.

I have a 97 dakota. It has a radiator that is 2yrs old. I have replaced the thermostat, and flushed out the system, and the heater works great, but my truck's temperature still runs to the maximum safety level. I just replaced the water pump last year, and I can not find any leaks in the system. Does anyone have an idea on what else to do?

Have you ever used stop-leak?
Try this; when the truck is at running temperature, feel the back of the radiator. Best turn off the motor, first. If it is cold, that part is plugged.
I recently did this and 2/3 to 3/4 was cold. My temperature gauge gave no clue.

just got my 99 RT 3 wks ago and I have been experiencing low coolant/erratic gauge issues since I got it. Has been no visible leakage; no wet floorboard; no water out the exhaust; and no milk in the oil. But what is strange is that it doesn't pull coolant from the reservoir. Had it checked at Dodge dealerand they found no probs. Gonna do the hand on back of radiator but am gonna prolly replace radiator anyway cause I think previous owner ran it on straight water. Friend of mine runs Fords and Dodges at local drag strips and will get advice. Will keep ya posted.

Some things that cause overheating besides a partially plugged radiator are: Bad radiator cap, stuck thermostat, air bubble in the system, blown head gasket, and partially blocked water journals in the block. Bad cap and thermostat are the most common problems.

Jerry brings up a good point. If the head gasket leaks, your friendly radiator shop can detect whats wrong in seconds. If not free, the cost is minimal.

Sounds like air pockets in your cooling system. My local Firestone and Dodge dealer did not diagnose/fix the problem. Try parking truck on a fairly steep incline cab forward, remove radiator cap, turn heater on full heat with fan at max, top up radiator and reservoir to full. Start truck and run til operating temp( about 1/3 way up,or just short of 210). Observe the coolant in radiator. If there are large "burps" in the radiator neck followed by a drop in the coolant level, keep refilling radiator with 50/50 mix coolant/HOT TAP WATER!! Bump your throttle linkage while under the hood to spin your water pump! Keep radiator topped with HOT TAP WATER/coolant until large "burps" stop. Replace radiator cap. I've had to do this to my RT twice.
