Subject: Cleaner wax, clean thyself?
IP: Logged

Message:
This may be a truly stupid question BUT ... if I apply one coat of cleaner wax, then apply a second, do I now have two coats, or did the 2nd coat "clean off" the first one? Essentially: Is a coat on the truck indeed worth two in the bottle?

I ask because I'm using Zymol and apparently since I bought a bottle years ago (and then promptly used something else) and now, they've gone from calling it a polish to a cleaner wax. (One small step for the bottling machine, one giant leap for a polish?) This has, of course, tossed my world into a state of chaos, but at least the truck beads real nice like. Question is, will it bead better or longer if I put on two coats??

I can't tell you, since I don't know. However, wax will quickly lose its luster, within days. I have used wax for years then tested Zaino, its a polish. I now use Zaino since the luster lasts a long time. A very long time compared to wax, about 5-6 months long. :) Try it, you'll like it

http://www.zainobros.com

Purchase Z1 (some polish lock), Z2 (high luster (polish) and Z5 (light swirl remover + polish).

Call Sal and tell him you've never used his products and want to know how to start and how to use it. DO NOT ASSUME you know what your doing with it - use THIN coats. Tell him your ONLY interested in the min setup, which is Z1 and Z2 but if you have swirls get Z5. There are other products that work well but we don't want to think its some crap scam "as seen on TV" type crap.

After using your cleaning wax use carnauba wax it has no cleaner or polish and it will build up in coats. I use Mothers or Blue Coral. I also use a product called Star Brite its a marine polish with teflon in it. I used this on my boat last year it holds up great going to put it on my truck here soon.

Okay, I'll try a couple coats of straight carnauba then to act as my barrier. I wish I could remember a brand of wax I once had - it was blue in a nearly unlabeled bottle, cost me a fortune at a car show over a decade ago - and that stuff took a faded old '81 Omni from flat pink to gloss graphic red! I just remember it smelled like peppermint and was supposedly pure carnauba, and came in a nondescript bottle.

I helped put a coat of Meguiar's on a friend's boat last year and after we dropped it in the lake for just a few hours it was gone below the waterline, so that Star Brite sounds pretty good!

IMHO, you are probably wasting your time with 2 coats of cleaner wax. I use Meguiar's cleaning wax (which by the way does a superlative job, heh, heh, heh) then Zymol. The Zymol doesn't smell like peppermint, but puts me in mind of those little coconut drinks you can get while lying on the beach in the caribbean....mmm. Where was I? Oh yeah, I find that Zymol leaves white residue on my door handles and mirror, and Meguiar's vinyl conditioner does a great job of getting rid of that. And IT smells great too- that good ole new car smell.

You'd like the Turtle Wax wipe-on tire dressing then - think Amaretto sour... The wasps love it too! BUZZZ!!!

I like Zymol's coconut scent too, but mostly switched to the Meguiar's vinyl spray because I couldn't stand the smell of the islands inside my cab. Nice bonus that it holds up longer than Armour All too though, huh? Boy, holding up longer - now that's a new thing for Meguiar's... :-P

Armour All - Arrrgh!!! Don't use it on your dash! The sunlight will cause a chemical breakdown, it can cause your dash to fade and crack. I've not only heard this on the forums, I have a friend that experienced it.

Yes I to have been told by many pro detailers the Armour All or any silicone base products are actually bad to use in the long run. I had my 68 Mustang Fastback in a show Saturday and some of the guys were using baby oil..! First time I've seen that. My detailer uses a combination of aloe vera and mink oil. It is a commercial product but I didn't get the name.
P.S. I won FIRST PLACE in the restored to original condition class...!! WEEEEE

Congrats, that is awesome!! I love those 60s Mustangs, they've been my favourite cars since I was a kid. I almost bought one about 15 years ago, but it needed a lot of work.
Baby oil huh? It sounds like the stuff that you are using is what I used to clean all my horse equipment with.

If you used any type of oil on the dash, wouldn't it stay wet and attract dust?

I just noticed some of the people using baby oil on the vinyl and trim for the car show. I'm sure it is not reccomended for daily use.
Unless your at home and........she is and....or they are and.....slippy-slippy we go...!

the best wash and wax combo i have found is/are these steps, also the best products you can get from any auto part dealer, Auto Zone, Wal-Mart right off the self, here goes....
1.Clean Tires and Wheels, wheel wells, w/ Greased lightining (rinse wheels good)
2.Wash with Eagle One Car wash red jug
3.Wax- A. Meguiars Ceaner wax in bottle
B. Mequiars Polish in Bottle
C. Mequiars Sratch-X to fill in Swirl Marks
D. Turtle Wax Carnauba Paste, its New
4.Shine Tires with Turtle Wax Tire Wax
5.Clean Windows with Eagle One 20/20, also good for wheel and chrome trim touch up
6. Treat all plastic trim with Mother's Back to Black, dont use this on the dask, it will blank it out after a lot of coats w/ it.
I recommend to use the same rag as the tire shin w/ the trim work that way it makes it all the more nice and shiney.
