if i am at a standstill and give it half throttle or more, something makes a loud knocking/ticking sound in the engine. this only happens from a stop and on hard acceleration. i know that it is not the fuel because the knocking sound is way too hard. also the knocking stops after i get up to speed, at about maybe 20 MPH. any ideas??? its really buggin me and i get weird looks at the drag.

First, stop draggin! Whatever it is, you stand a good chance of making what may be a little problem into a big one. What year and engine combo? How many miles on the drive train? Is it a rattle like marbles in an aluminum can, or a lower frequency knock?

could be u-joints, and they stop knocking when u shift gears, as the driveshaft slows down. check to see if you hear any ticking at mid-high rpms in other gears besides first.....

yeah, i dont run at the track anymore nor accelerate hard anymore. its a 1999 CC 5.2L 4x4 auto 3.55 gears. The truck just hit about 36k so the warranty is over, DAMNIT!...its really hard to explain the noise...i would say it kind of sounds like a really large ratchet when it clicks. sorry , its tough to explain.

in response to mudrunner, this is an automatic, and there is no such noise at ANY rpms other than accelerating from a standstill. It is a very loud and obvious clicking noise, where i have NO DOUBT that is ONLY happens on hard acceleration. thanks

It is called detonation or "ping". You probably need the intake plenum gasket replaced. It has been sucking in oil and the oil causes the detonation. Though they use oil when this happens.

Stop running 82 octane gas in it!!!! lol
You are ganna have to narrow it down, I can just see you going into a shop telling the mechanic "i have a funny noise coming out of engine bay" and his eyes turn into $$$$$$ dollar signs....

When was the last time you had a tune up?
Have you tried higher octane, or even different brand gasoline?
How long has it been going on?
Are you low on oil....lol....I have to ask...
Is it detonation?....you have a knock sensor, and if you were having anykind of "knock" your timing should retard, and it will run like a turd on wheels. If it isnt retarding your timing you could have a defunct knock sensor?
Does it idle weird?....could be an indication your TPS sensor is bad.
Have you installed a the computer performance "chip"...(isnt really a chip)...it could be bad
Have you cleaned your throttle body with anything recently? Some cleaners can damage Cataylic converters, could be stopped up....
When was the last time you changed air filter?
Stock ignition?

Just some of the obvious reasons you could be having problems.....
You ganna have to run down your problem.....narrow it down

Look inside your intake manifold, if you see oil, you are in for a fun job. If the gasket on the bottom of the manifold is leaking, plan on a full day for doing this repair. Mopar should be made to fix this on a recall....

I too asked about this in a topic which got barried. My truck has less than 4k miles on it and when I get up to about 20mph I hear this CLICK sound as if it is shifting gears. Is it shifting gears or should I go yell at the dealer? My truck is an auto.

thanks
