thats the only additive that goes into most of the "off" brands.

Is this generic also added to the Brand names, or are their individual additive packages "stand alones"?

-Thanks.

The generic stuff goes in all of the gasolines. Its mainly for emmissions stuff, and it varies as to what's in it from state to state.

Got it. Now is this generic stuff added at the terminal at the time of loading, in addition to the magic brand juice, or does it come down the pipeline with the generic already added?

The generic additive is added at the end of production, before the fuel goes out to the storage tanks to wait to be loaded into the tankers.

Guess I shoulda been a teacher!! I never thought anybody was this interested in this stuff besides me.

This is GREAT stuff, Shawn, and a real contribution to this site.

I am an Engineer (Electrical), besides owning a Dakota, and have wondered for decades about how this all worked. Guess I really need to visit a Terminal and see it all in action.

As I understand it now, the generic juice, state mandated, is added prior to tank storage at the terminal. A Branded customer has his magic blended in at the time of tanker fill from brand-specific on-site tanks. Since unbranded customers don't add any additional magic, they take it straight from the tank to Walmart (whatever...) Right?

Exactly.

Now my personal $0.02 is that the "magic" for brand specifics is mostly smoke and mirrors. I've never seen any benefit from any of the Techron or "Drive Clean" gasolines. If you add a good injector cleaner every few thousand miles, I think you do just as well. So I'm not sure how much merit I give to those tanks of "magic" additives.

But now you know the basics of where everything goes.

Wanna learn what a Mechanical Seal is and does? Thats my real specialty. Coming soon to a theater near you :)

I'm sure you are right, but the reality is that almost no one does that, nor will they. So the bottom line question becomes are you better off to pay a few cents per gallon more for Branded gas and get those additives up front, or wait for trouble and then fix it. I almost always buy Branded but would go with the Safeways, Albertsons, and WalMarts if I was assured that they had equivalent additives.

I buy the unbranded stuff, and I run some injector cleaner through every 5000 miles or so. No problems yet in 54000 miles. But your right, if you work out the economics, it might just be better to go with the name brand.

It's been so many years since I've had injector problems (maybe 15?) I got wondering if there even is such a problem anymore. Have used Shell 89 or 91 with an occasional tank of Chevron premium all that time, mostly in MBZ, Volvos, and Lexus, plus 87 in Chev, Ford and Dak trucks, and not experienced even a flicker of miss. Maybe it isn't necessary to worry about the injectors with use of good fuel?

Guess I should set aside one vehicle for use with a "major" unbranded and see what happens.
