Subject: Battery Recommendations? IP: Logged
Message: Have had my 5.2L 4x4 for 36k, its tends to sit in the parking lot a lot when I'm at college and the battery doesn't want to hold charge for very long anymore. Anybody recommend a specific battery or are they all pretty much the same. I'm guessing it should have about min cold cranking of about 600 Amps.

Message: Go get Napa's top model battery for your truck. Not the gel-based unless you have the extra money. They are a very good price for the extra cold-cranking amps you'll get.

Message: Still have the orig. one in the Dakota. In the 5.9 however, I replaced the orig. with a Die Hard Gold from NTB. Excellent battery, pretty good price. - Jim

Message: Die Hards are great batteries but a little less cold-cranking amps than napa's and at a few more bucks.
Just an FYI...

Message: I took a ride down to the local Wal-Mart and saw the EverStart Battery, i think its called the MAXX or something like that (yellow) with top and side posts. It was rated at 900 cold cranking Amps with a 120 min reserve. It was only $60 and came with 3 year replacement warranty...sounds pretty good to me, but what do i know...what do u think???

Message: I would not worry about cold cranking amp's too much. Once the battery industry figured out that people started buying based on CA's and CCA's they started stuffing more thin plates into each cell to get Amp rateing up. This realy shortens the life of the battery. The two best brands are AC/Delco and the second best is Champion. If you want a gel cell then get an Optima! Stay away from Excide battery's.

Message: Second sandmans warning about EXIDE.
BAck in my college days, I stumped for the Big Red K doing blue lights and other stuff. Marked time in the automotive department where yes, we sold DELCO and EXIDE batteries.
Exides had a comeback rate over DELCO about 7 to 1. Most of the time it was due to a dead cell.
THis comeback covers their cheapo stuff all the way to the most expensive.
We hardly ever sold their Marine batts because after two or three deep discharges, they were shot. The DELCO never came back to us!!!!
Johnson COntrols is now back making Diehard BAtts for Sears after a four year run with EXIDE. FYI

Message: How about Interstate? I've always heard they were one of the best. I've had to replace the stock batts in my wife's old car and my old truck, both times I went with Interstate. Partly because they were the only ones sold by my local service station, but partly because of their rep.

Message: I will never buy a durango again, infact i will never buy a dodge in any size shape or form. This SUV has to be one of the worst cars I have ever owned, not to mention the dealership that continues to bleed me for every penny I have. I have a 1999 durango that is now going to be on battery number three. The sad thing is that the dealer seems to think that because I am female I am stupid enough to think that the battery needs to be replaced every 12 months. I had a Ford and a Mercedes for 4 years each and never once replaced the battery. Toyota here I come!!

Message: I love the OPTIMA and the AC DELCO because of the fact that they DO NOT make a mess under the hood like other batteries.
Always remember that you can always go above the recommended CCA's but never go below.
Dr. D
p.s.
you can mount the OPTIMA behind the seat, in your toolbox or in the back of the bed due to the fact that it does not need venting (nice feature).

Message: I too leave the vehicle for weeks at a time. Although I haven't had any problems yet with the battery, I decided to do a little bit of preventative maintenence: Went down to our local gadget store (Canadian Tire) and picked up a solar panel (12x6in) that plugs into the 12v spare cig lighter plug(12v constant). I just leave it on the dash when I leave and it maintains the battery. Did this for 10yrs in my Toy p/u - never had to replace a battery!

Message: Basically
Die Hard - Good
Optima - Good
Interstate - Good
Optima & Interstate are gel cells I think which makes them safer so if you can afford the extra case I'd go with one of those two. My next will be a Optima when I upgrade.

Message: How do you test for a battery drain? I have an 89 Dakota with 145,000 miles, V6 3.9. I have a new batttery and rebuilt alternator. When I go to start it in the morning the starter turns over slowly. The starter was replaced about 1 1/2 years ago. This slow/ no cranking problem started suddenly five days ago. I suspect that there is a drain on the battery. How do I test for this. I have multimeter, that's about it for test equipment.
