Okay now, hypothetically, if one had an exhaust system that wouldn't normally pass inspection...hypothetically...where would one go to pass inspection >wink wink nudge nudge< It would help if the hypothetical solution was somewhere around Fort Worth...hypothetically that is.
And please don't post any stupid answers. This hypothetical person actually needs to hypothetically get this hypothetically done hypothetically soon.

Message: Well since I got my cat cut off and I live in dallas and the inspection guys here would sh!t their pants if they saw that I'm just gonna take it to some crumby small town where all they check is if your headlights and blinkers work. Most guys like that don't care where your vehicle is registered they just get you in and get you out. Least thats the way my hometown is up in N. Texas.

Message: i think that anybody could tell that your muffler is off, i mean hypothetically if it WERE missing. If that's your only problem just go to autozone and by a $15 glasspack and clamp it on temporarily.

Message: I used to do inspections, and they are right, goto a college town like nacogdoches, or Livingston, or college station.....and say you are in the college, they are supposed to make you sign an affidavit saying you reside in an emission county, and there are currently 3 in texas...Harris, tarrent, and the third which is west texas....i dont remember its name. By law you have to have a muffler, so I would do as Intense said just throw a 10.99 muffler on it, but this brings up another issue, of cataylic converter, you cannot alter anything prior to the cat, and the exhaust pipe has to either exit the body PAST the passenger compartment(which is just past the cab in our trucks) or be turned down past the rear axle. Noise is a hard one to argue, if he fails you because of noise, he must have some means of metering it. Hopefully this helps, this should be a good guide for you, but every inspector is different, and some dont give a crap, I know of some guys in houston who do inspections like this, but I will not discuss them in this forum.

Message: Alright guys I got it inspected. I reconnected my Flowmaster. It was never totally off the truck, just disconnected. The place I went to is run by an older guy (late 50's I'd say) and he checked my turn signals, horn, and what not. Then he went looking for the muffler. He saw that it didn't go past the rear axle but didn't even care. (I actually have it just cut after the muffler, not even turned down)
Anyway, I now have a nice new emission sticker. My old one expired last December. So I really needed to get this done.
Wait a second...hypothetically...the hypothetical guy was able to hypothetically get a hypothetical inspection sticker.
Thanks for the replies peeps!

That's what I thought but some places can be real asses to you. There's quite a few people around here that hear my exhaust come up to them and then see the Speedoptions banner and immediately think that I'm a 'no good street racer'. I just tell people "Yes, I am a street racer. All I can race is the street, my truck is too slow to actually race other vehicles."
Yup yup.

Message: I was told by a DPS inspection investigator(he is the guy who oversees all Texas inspection station inquiries, and basically the guy who impliments all new state emission requirement checks) that, technically if a truck has dumped exhaust it must be turned down past the rear axle, if it does not exit the truck past the cab.
Of course, I asked him where this is written down , he avoided answering me...so it seems more of a black art than anything. I had a guy dispute my inspection, thats why I know so much about it, if the guy would not have been an ashole, I would have passed him, but he biched me out before I did the inspection, so I found a reason to fail him....

When I was researchin this the first time I was looking things up at, ummm, some site. I can't remember which one. I think it may have been the main site for the DPS. Anyway, from all the reading I came to the conclusion that as long as it was dumped at least 6 inches from the cab and was not near anything combustible (i.e. gas tank) I should be okay.
But I'm sure that a strict place would have failed me. This sure as hell wouldn't have flown in a nice part of Dallas or something.

Message: way to go danny!
i think 90% of a vehicle's ability to pass is the attitude of the customer. i had taken my first car (82 lebaron with a 2.6 mitsu) to get inspected and i didn't plan on it passing. i had a kick @ss stereo in there with a lot of speakers. they asked if i would put the top down and let them listen to it, and i was like "sure!". i imagine that is the only way i passed.
oh, and if any of you are looking at ways to make your engine pass go for the msd ignition. my truck ran only 1 hydrocarbon at idle and 0 hydrocarbons at 2500 rpms... good combustion.

Message: I think in an emission county they can fail it simply if they cannot put the tailpipe analyzer in it conveniently, so if it isnt exiting the vehicle, they can fail it, I am not sure....I hav not heard of anyone being failed because of this, but I do remember reading that.
