Subject: MIL P0442 Wont go away dealer is a joke IP: Logged
Message: Hey Dakota experts I have a 2001 4.7 II keep getting the P0442 code twicw he dealer has said its the gas cap...I say B.S. I can smell the fumes..will I have this problem for life what else can I do besides check the gas cap and reset the computer...on top of the code I have bad detonation...less with 93 fuel but is there a cure for this problem please reply Bernd????

Message: Never heard of a 4.7 with a ping problem. I think there is a flash for it but it may take the fuel milage and power down. As far as the code. Take it to another dealer who knows what they are doing because it isn't that hard to fix.
2001 RC 4.7 5sp 9.25" 3.92 LSD Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, HO cams installed. Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

Message: Basically you need special tools to fix it. Only the dealer has them. You can try seeing if all the vac lines are all installed properly.

Message: i had the same problem on my 01'ram.
it was the vapor canister. kept giving the code for a loose or bad gas cap. hope this helps
mine had a hole in it.

Message: I had a similar problem with my 01 Qc 4.7 4x4 auto. After 8 trips to the dealer for a MIL light, they finally discovered it was a faulty (cracked) evap canister, which is located on the frame rail under the cab area. I was initially blamed for not knowing how to tighten the gas cap...you can find the obd trouble codes at obdii.com. Good luck!
