Message: Probably a short in the turn signal switch. A lot of stuff goes on in that switch, and since this is a 2002 you should have the warranty still. It isn't a fun job to do yourself, especially since you have an airbag.

Message: I have the same problem with my 2002 Dak; sporadically, the hazard lights will blink when I use the left turn signal. I took it by the dealership when it was malfunctioning one day and they quickly diagnosed it as a faulty switch, which they replaced. I didn't even make it home before it started happening again.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Could a bad bulb be making this occur? I pulled the tail light assemblies and checked the bulbs; all look and appear to function OK. It's getting annoying, and I'm running out of possible explanations.

Message: I had the same on my 01. They replaced the whole assembly. It was OK for a week then started again.
They put in another switch and it's been good for 6 months.

Message: My 02 Dakota does the same thing, only it is my right hand turn signal, and only once in a while. The dealer replaced the switch assembly but it started happening again as I pulled out of thier parking lot. I turned around and gave it back to them and told them to fix it. Now, it won't do it for them. I know that as soon as I drive it out of the lot, it'll start happening again. Any ideas what I should do?

Message: I've got a 2002 with same problems w turn sigal and flashers, dealer said they replaced switch, started happening again on way home. This should be fixable its a damn safety hazard. I heard there was a service bulletin on it, but the hicks at the dealer hadn't heard of it. Heard there was a specific part number they need to replace it with, otherwise it will keep happening. Anyone got more on if dealer resolved this?

Message: I have a 2002 Quad Cab. My right directional puts the hazards on sporadically, although the left one works fine. I've also noticed the driver side brakelight stops working when the directional puts the hazards on. The dealer replaced the switch, but it still happens and its steadily getting worse. I've changed the bulbs and cannot seem to find any damage to the wires. I'll post back when I figure it out. I think this should be a recall.

Message: FYI.
The turn signal lamp circuit, hazard circuit and stop lamps are all controlled through the "combination flasher". I traced out the internal circuit of this thing one weekend. It has three relays inside as well as some isolation diodes, timer IC and many other components. It's quite abit more complicated than the old flasher circuits of days past. My money is on this being the culprit of some/ many/ most of the issues listed here. If one of these diodes failed "shorted" internally, it would cause several of the symptoms described above.
I'm not saying it's defineately this, but I believe it's a good bet.

Message: Had the same sporadic problem on my '02 QC (hazards on when I turned right). The dealer said they replaced the "flasher module". I don't know too much about this part though. But I've been driving it for 2 months now and no problem since.

Message: When you brought it to the dealer, did they find this problem easily? I find it is easier to make happen when its over 85 degrees outside. We've had 2 cool days and I can't get it to happen. I have an appt in 2 days and hope the dealer can find the problem. I am going to ask them to take a look at the flasher module as you suggest. I just hope they can reproduce the problem. Thank you for your reply.

Message: I have a 2002 dakota quad cab. Last week I went to turn on my right turn signal and the lights on the dash indicated that my four way flashers were on. At first I thought I had accidently turnd on the four ways. I went to turn the four ways off and they were not on. I stoped along side the road and turned my right turn signal on and both the rear signal lights were flashing. I checked the front and only the right front was blinking. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the turn signal flasher. They told me that the flasher had shorted out and was causing the problem. They were correct this solved the problem. They also told me that they had seen this problem on two other dakotas before and that these other two trucks had not had any moe problems with the turn signals. I checked to see how much the flasher cost in case I had to replace it after the warranty ran out. It was $39.00. So even if your truck is out of warranty you can fix it pretty cheap yourself. The flasher is located under the dash near the headlight switch. You just pull the old one out and put the new one in. Hope this helps JB

Message: I know these are old posts but they
helped me diagnose my turn signal
(hazards intermittently came on with
left turn signal) problem so I wanted
to post my fix for anyone else
reading this. My problem was the
flasher module, but a replacement was
gonna be 70 bucks (in canada) so I
took it to an electronics repair shop
and they found a couple of cold
solder cracks. These poor contacts
caused intermittent bad grounds which
in turn found another way to ground
thru another relay, causing the
intermittent 4 ways. They charged me
5 bucks to fix the joints and I've
been 3 weeks trouble free.
