Message: The standard size gas tank is 15 gal. or
you might have the optional size of 22 gal.
Fill'er up and see how much you can put in.
As far as the gauge, I'm not sure. The float
inside the tank might be stuck.
Hope this helps.

Message: I have driven Dodge cars and trucks for a long time, if a gas guage sending unit lasts over 75,000 miles, it is a rare event. If you do it yourself, I hear it is easier to remove the bed to get at the sending unit than to drop the tank.

Message: Before you jump into that, check to see if the sending wire from the tank is frayed or pinched and grounding out anywhere. That would block the signal and in the older cars it fries the gauge too if it goes on for any length of time; not sure how it would affect Dakota guage.
