Subject: computer glitch?

I own a 98 SLT 5.2 V8 and here recently have had many things starting to act up. My son has a 97 SLT with some of theses same problems.
First, I have looked over several post here and it seems to me that alot of you are having OD problems with your tranny's. I too have had these problems and it has not only been with the OD but with 2nd and drive as well. I've changed filters and fluids with little effect. I've used additives with good but limited length of success. If any of you have the solution to this manufactures defect please let me know.
Second, while coming home one night I went to dim my lights to oncoming traffic and lost all headlights. After flicking my dimmer switch a couple of times they came back on. My son also had this problem in his truck. Anyone else?
Third, recently my abs/brake light on the dash started going off and on. When these lights are on the speedodometer will not register speed till you get past 20 to 25 mph. When they are off the speedo works fine. Along with this my check engine light comes on every now and then and I will reset it only to have it return a month or two later.
I do not trust dealers and believe they charge entirely to much for the work performed. Is there a fair a reasonable way to have these problems checked? I tend to believe this is all computer related but am not positive. Thank you all for your input. This is my first post here but am impressed by the knowledge that lies in these forums.

Sincere thanks,
Bowtuner

The ABS & Brake like coming on is more than likey your rear sensor. Happened to me a little while ago. I would mess around with the check engine light coming on. It is there for a reason. If anything, you may want o get yourself a code reader. Has saved me some $ by fixing problems myself. Although there are times when you need to go to a dealer.

Thanks for the response Dave! I generally would not mess with the engine lights but my dad was a ford mechanic for years and with the exception of running a diagnostic all he would do is reset the computer. I'm from the old school and don't really understand alot about the electronic mishaps of todays automobiles. Give me a 70 cuda or a 72 chevy and I'll take it apart with my eyes shut and put it back together better than ever. Throw in a computer and you just screwed it up for me. Tell me more about these code readers. I'm a do-it-yourselfer and like to know my own truck. Have waited patiently for a detailed book on my truck but no one ever has it. Thanks again. Have you replaced the TPS on the TB?

You can pick one up at the dealer, and it's about a 5 minute job to swap out. Two screws, and one electrical connector is all.

A lot of people I know have had problems with their tranny (seems to not want to hold gear; revs drop up and down 200 rpm at will; etc), and this fixed it. Me included - cheap thing to replace before going into the tranny.

ABS and brake lights won't go off

I put on smaller tires than what came with my 98 Dodge Dakota. Would this have anything to do with my lights staying on. I added brake fluid, which was low, but it didn't help. Any suggestions.
Thanks,
John
