Subject: muffler water IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7 w/the factory exhaust on it right now. I noticed this morning that there was water squirting out of the bottom of the muffler, not the tailpipe but the actual muffler. Maybe i'm just inexperienced but I have never seen a muffler do that. Is the muffler bad or is this common sitting outside overnight in 25-35 degree weather?

Message: Frosty is correct. there is a small drain hole in the stock mufflers to pass water out caused by condensation. most of the time this is caused by short spurt drives, and water collects in muffler, if you drive long distances everyday then you should see almost no water. This is Normal dont worry.

Message: Thanks alot, the more I thought about it the less I worried. My truck only has 15k and I didn't think a muffler could rust out anywhere near that quick. this brings up a question, do aftermarket mufflers have this and if not why. Is that a downside to aftermarket?

Message: actually water in the muffler is caused by a lack of muffler bearing grease.

Message: Usually aftermarkets dont have this small hole, however most exhaust systems now days, incl factory are stainless steel. and last a long time..

Message: My 01's exhaust has a lot of water in it as well. I've never seen it dripping out of the muffler, but then again, I've never looked. I just see it dripping out of the pipe.

Message: If your muffler has alot of water you can rent out your truck for irrigation purposes and make some cash.
Here's a link for those muffler bearings:

Message: Seriously speaking, an engine compresses air the same as an air compressor. Ever notice the drain valve on an air compressor? It is there to allow you to drain the water that accumulates when air is compressed. In a car, as the exhaust system gets hot, the moisture is more easily held in suspension by the hot air and is carried out as invisible vapor. For further enlightenment as to the science of this effect, use your search engine and look up "relative humidity". And next time you attend school, pay attention!
