When I picked up my 2002 they had to change the radio antenna. The antenna is not smooth. It has a wire wrapped around it , not just wrapped around but made into it that gets the temperature and direction (I think). You probably have the wiring in the harness but the antenna may need to be changed.

This should be in a FAQ somewhere. No, the wires are not there. You'll either have to manually wire it or replace the main dash wiring harness (pull the dash and steering column) and the cab harness (drop the headliner), and possibly the computer box to the right of the glove compartment.

Figuring out which replacement harnesses you need depends on what optional stuff came on the truck. Expect ~$400 for the wiring, $200 for the computer module.

Thought I would throw this out there. The reason our antennas, and most all new car ones, have that funny wire wrap around feature is so that they make less wind noise. The shape makes the antenna vibrate as it travels through the wind and this additional movement somehow makes less wind noise. I only know this because I was a cellular engineer in the past and one of the many complaints of new cell phone car mounted installations was the increased wind noise from their new smooth and straight antennas. Eventually a company named "The Antenna Company" figured out this little design trick and resolved the issue. I don't think this company exists any longer and I may be inaccurate about them being the origin, but that was the first time I had ever seen that on an antenna and now it is very common. Yes, another useless fact...

I love my Dak and its whisper quiet antenna....

I have looked through the archives and some say they are pre wired and others say you have to manually wire it. If it is prewired where abouts in the headliner would i find the connecter and what would it look like. I may just have a peak and attempt it if it is there.

Thanks

To check the cab harness, just remove the single screw at the front of the overhead console and pull it down. It's held in place with two spring clips and the single screw.

The sort answer is (I think) yes. I have done extensive research on doing this. The wiring is *NOT* there you can be sure by removing the console as mentioned previously. To do the job you will need to have the "highline" CTM or Central Timer Module. You *DO* have the highline ctm if you already have RKE (remote keyless entry), power locks, intermitent wipers, or other advanced features. The "baseline" CTM is used for trucks without these features. There are (9) wire connections you will need to make. 3 for the dome lights (wires are already there) 2 for the CCD Chrysler Collision Detection system (+) adn (-), 2 for the Ambient Temp. Sensor. The sensor is hardwired into the console. I believe the last two are for power 12V (+) and (-). **A note of caution** --- DO *NOT* EVER CUT or mess with the CCD bus wires as they pass information from module to module in your vehicle. Tampering with them could cause damage to your CTM or PCM. You will need to find the connector locations that you get the signal from for the CCD bus.

If you want, send me an email and I will send you a copy off all of the diagrams I have on this project. I started this project with my 2001 but looking at 2000 diagrams (I thought they were the same) turns out 2000 and 2001 are wired different so I will have to wait until I can get my hands on a 2001 Service Manaul.

Good Luck.

Eallen, I have the overhead computer and partially istalled it. The computer comes with four wires. Im only interest in the compass and temp. I know one wire is constant power, one is the ground, and one is the ingnition. I assuming the last wire is the temp. but how do I hook this up. My sensor in from to the radiotor has two wires. Any help or diagram will be appreciated.

Or you can get the Gentex K20 autodimming mirror with temp and compass like I did. And come out better than the trucks with the computer. Because I don't think they installed autodimming mirrors from the factory on the dakotas.

Just an idea.

PS. I love my mirror.

The overhead console needs battery, ground, PCI bus (not to be confused with CCD)ignition. the display Mini Trip COmputer is made for specific vehicles. It "looks" for information from the various modules with in the vehicle. Interchanging them with one from a Jeep or other Chrysler car line is cheating yourself out of the functions that are available. You may loose the temp, MPG data, or trip odometer.

handi, mike..

What kind of BS are you feeding these people??

Folks, I'VE DONE IT!!! Over a year ago. SEarch the archives on this site with the search feature.

What a load of CRAP-change the antenna? You were kidding, right?

And the hundreds of dollars, pulling the dash, etc? What a load of crap!

Want to know how much it ended up costing me?
$80.00US, for a brand new, in the box, overhead computer, that someone on this site bought and then sold their dak before installing it. I wired it in for FREE, on my 01, quad cab, it was a whooping three wires!

Use the search feature on this site, make your self a cup of coffee, or fav. beverage, and DON'T listen to these keyboard experts that think a 'cat back' exhaust on a 4.7, will do anything for hp and tq, etc.

Handi, you were joking, right? Changing the antenna? I could take my antenna off, and the compass and temp would still work fine.

so... anyway... can anybody here just POST the directions on how to do it? personally, when somebody says "it's easy, only 3 wires" that doesn't tell me anything, I have 6 wires, all colored black. second, if you say "search the archives" i can only guess at which words to use to find the exact post you're talking about, I searched and found THIS post, so I must not know how to "search the archives" as you say.

I have a 2001 Quad Cab and I got an overhead mini trip computer for $30 on ebay. there are 9 wires total, but 3 are for the lights (of course) so now I'm left with 6.

Also, I will have to install wires myself, but it is NOT necessary to "Rip out the headliner", If you remove the plastic cover from the windshield post (where the hand hold is) and remove the overhead console, you can run wires underneath the headliner using a hanger or some other long rigid tool, it's easy, then just put back the plastic cover, running the wires underneath, and feed them behind the dash under the fuse door.

Now I just need to know where to plug them in under the dash. Any real help is appreciated!

Anyone know if it is possible to swap the console over from a 97 dak SLT to my 02 sport that is w/o the console?
just the sunglass holder, lights etc.
If the 97 comes with all the wiring and harness's it should be only a fight to get it all out?
