Subject: cheaper head work IP: Logged
Message: If something went bad in one of my heads on my 93' dakotas 318, would I be saving much money by removing them myself and then taking them into a shop that rebuilds heads, builds engines, and is a machine shop? How much does it take to rebuild a set of heads? Finally, if I wanted to "pep" it up a bit, what should I have the mecahnic do?

Message: Yes, if your comfertable with the work. It's not as simple as just bolting it back up and away you go. Close, but not quite. :0)
I had the heads on my Chevy 305 done a few years ago, new exhaust valves all around and just plain cleaning, springs and valve seats, ended up being like $150 for a pair. Not too bad if you ask me.

Message: Thats ALOT cheaper than new heads. I figure ya gotta take off the intake manifold, fuel system, and just unbolt the heads. I figure the hardest part is gonna be torquing them down right.

Message: Intake Manifold, Fuel System, Exhaust, some of the outboard stuff bolts to the heads (I'm not sure if the altenator and AC do, they did on the Chevy), and don't forget your pushrods and rockers! May want to consider putting in new lifters and pushrods (Not expensive at all!), and going to Roller Rockers. If your replacing the springs, go to a slightly stiffer one. It'll snap that valve closed quicker and reduce 'float' at higher RPMs.
As for mods, enlarging the exhaust port can't hurt any... or is it the intake port? Er... I'm not sure. That depends mostly on if your reusing the valves or not.
