CW,
I just got a call from the dealership about my truck. On friday it was towed in because the brake pedal wouldn't depress fully and wasn't roadworthy. THe dealership said that it looked like a rodent had chewed through the vacuum line on the brakes and had partially chewed through the fuel line. He said that since it was a rodent, the warranty does not cover these repairs and it would cost around $200 (US) to repiar including labor. Two questions:

1. Is it possible for an animal to chew through these lines?

2. Do I really have a choice in whether I have them fix it or not? It sounds like the truck won't be roadworthy without these repairs.

I have to call him back by noon tomorrow to tell him to go ahead and order the parts. Thanks for your advice.

Bill

What year truck is it?

If it's fairly new, there's no way a rodent will be able to chew thru the fuel line. It's steel braided line with a rubber abrasion cover. The vaccuum line shouldn't cost that much.

I have a 2001 3.9 4x4 CC. Is the fuel line rubber up by the engine? I wasn't sure if it was steel braided all the way back or not. I want as much input as possible. THe bad thing is, the dealer already has said they won't pay for it, and it isn't roadworthy the way it is, so it looks like I have to pay it. THe brake line is only going to cost 7 bucks, the fuel line is the real b!@#$.

The fuel line is steel braid from it's connection under the truck right by the crossmember to the fuel rail. The rubber is just a covering so the braid doesn't rub and chaff other components under the hood. You would have a tough time cutting thru that line with a hacksaw... let alone trying to chew thru it with rodent teeth. Wherever the fuel line is chewed on... just peel back the rubber to verify that the steel braid is still intact.

Or at least that's what I would do.

I fogot to mention that when I had the truck towed it was idling very roughly on top of the problems I was having with the brakes. I thought that may explain the fuel line problem.

The ripped vacum line will make you idle rough,a rip in the fuel line will give you a fire and you would be able to smell fuel spraying out if it was all the way through, man a rodent eh?try and make sure it just wasnt routed properly and was rubbing on something are rodents are problem where you live?

THe guy at the dealership said that the fuel line was not completely bitten through, he said it looked like whatever was eating it got done with the brake line and started on the fuel line but didn't get all the way through. I know gas wasn't spewing out of the thing but if the fuel line has any sort of abrasions in it I don't want to take chances and will pay to have it replaced. When I call the guy tomorrow I am going to ask him if there was a possibility of it rubbing up against something. Rodents are not a huge problem, but there are mice and squirrels every now and again. Sounds like I will be ponying up for these repairs.

I would probably replace it for safetys sake. That line if it burst could easily catch fire on the exhaust manifolds.

CW,
Do you think it is possible to bite through the fuel line even partially? I just want to make sure the dealership isn't trying to cover up something that was rubbing. I figure the dealer would probably just assume it was warranty work and wouldn't lie to me.

Thanks for all the input.

I would think that if it had been rubbing on something that they would just warrany it. I looked on my truck and if the just bit through the exterior braiding it wouldn't be a problem but I can't see it from here. Some one needs to invent a transport device so that I can flash there and have a look.

Thanks for the help. I will just call the place tomorrow and have them order the parts and pay for the stuff. I am going to ask them to save the parts and let me have them. I may be able to get something out of my insurance agent if he sees the parts. Just have to see. I haven't had the best of luck with this truck so far, hopefully things will go better from now on. Wish there was a transport device so you could come down here at have a look too!
