Message: Some idiot (sorry, I can't think of another way to describe him/her/it) in another forum said he has the dealer (Jiffy Lube, whomever) remove his skid plates for an oil change -- each and every freaking time!! Moron?!?!? I think so. I have a 99 Durango, SLT++, every conceivable skid plate thought of by Dodge, and I have never -- repeat -- NEVER had an opportunity to remove one for routine maintenance. Am I alone here???!?!? Christ -- the insanity of some people!!! --- Jim

Message: Hey Jim, you think maybe your over reacting to someone elses mistake or what you see as unessessary work? As long as we're on the topic though, I just got a new 02 CC 4x4 with all the skid plates on it. Your saying I should be able to perform all routine maintance with them on. Didn't think about that when I decided to order my truck with the plates.
Thanks in advance.

Message: I remove my middle skid plate when I change oil ... does that make me a moron? Nawww.
I'd rather undo 4 bolts than slop oil and have it sit on top of the skid plate to catch dirt. Takes all of 5 minutes and makes for a cleaner oil change.

Message: I want skids also but not the OEM plastic variety - shatter on impact, LOL.
The only morons that I can think of are the ones that designed those composite skids, IMO.
The only late model metal plate protects the gas tank and that's the only one that I installed.

Message: Well -- I guess (in some folk's opinion) I am the moron for not removing my skid plates. But, there's no need to. The oil drains nicely into the pan, and there's minimal mess when removing the oil filter. Wipes up just fine. Also, changed the tranny fluid this weekend, skid plates remained intact -- again, minimal mess. Oh well - to each his own. - Jim

Message: The older daks don't have any problems with the skid plates but the 2001 and up do. They drain right on top of the plate.

Message: This explains why I don't remove my plates. Didn't know they were "reconfigured" in the 2001+ models. Both my 99's allow easy access without removing. Thanks for clearing it up CW -- couldn't understand why anyone would want to remove these things. This explains why - Jim

Message: I don't know about that, CW! I have an '89 with full (METAL!!!) skid plates. Before I got creative with a funnel, the oil would leave the drain plug, flow onto the frame covering the sway bar, and from there would flow right onto the front differential skid plate. There is a drain hole on the front diff. skid plate, so the oil would be draining off the frame and out the hole. Two places to put pans! After the first time this happened, I figured out a way to hold a funnel against the oil pan drain so the oil would go through it instead, but I did have to remove the skid plate to clean it.

Message: Acutally the skid plate fiasco started in 2000. I don't take off my skid plates, but I have a cut out pop bottle (cut it in half longways) that I use to deflect the oil through the skid plate opening. I have a longer one I use for the filter. Works like a charm (although I still find it ridiculous that Dodge hasn't fixed this problem yet).

Message: I have an 01 quad 4X4 with the skid plate package. Unless mine is different for some reason I see no need to remove the middle plate. The access hole to the drain plug on mine is almost large enough to slip a 2 litre bottle through! The oil drains out beautifully and theres plenty of room for wrenching.

Message: Spyder I meant the gen 3 Daks. Yeah I think you are right Kota4trax I was thinking that after I entered it in that it might be 2000 and up with the plastic skid plates. If the oil is hot then I think it drains into the skid plate. I don't do many oil changes anymore so I don't really pay attention.

Message: Well I guess I'm one of those MORONs also. It's alot easier to remove the skid plate and not have to worry about the oil gathering dirt on it. Also it allows me to due a visual inspection of the underside while doing the oil change.

Message: Here is my sad skid plate story:
Bought a 2002 QC 4x4, with order to add skid plate group later (Dealer promised could be done).
Later dealer says there are here, bring in the truck, so I do. Turns out he only has 1 of the 3 plates in the skid plates in the group, which he installed.
Now he says can't get all 3, only two are available as aftermarket items. Now he has the second one ready.
Now I find out the factory plates are plastic and have a history of cracking! Now I find out someone is fabricating good steel plates (and the oil drain hole even lines up), and he even lives near me!
Soon I will learn if I can get some money back...

Message: Bought a set of the Steel Skidplates last year and so far they've been great! Nothin' like sliding over terrain with no damage -- a few scratches, but that just gives 'em character, right? Overall, very well built and VERY heavy duty. I do have a few pics somewhere in the computer, and I'll try and post them on my website.

Message: Ok, to clarify what I beleive is teh problem. The skid plates really only have an issue on trucks with the 4.7L engine. The oil drain hole is further forward than the access in the skid plate.
Now, the oil change place I've been going has been taking it off to simplify installation, but after a recent inspection, I've found that mine is BROKEN! It looks like they undid the front bolts, let it hang then undid the rears. That short time of letting it hang fractured the drivers side rear bolt area. A whole 4" piece just shattered and fell off.. What a piece of crap!
