Message: I just saw a commercial for the new GMC Sierra Denali truck that is to come out very soon that has what they call Quadra-Steer where all four wheels turn when the wheel is turned. THe commercial makes it look really neat. I would love to test drive one just to see what kind of a difference there is in steering. It will be interesting to see if this catches on.
Here's a link if you want to take a look at their website:

Message: I read about that a while back, at low speed the tires turn opposite the front to decrease turning radius, but at high speed they turn the same way to make more stable lane changes. A completely electric setup.

The've had that setup on firetrucks for a few years now and i've seen it on large motorhomes also. It works great for turning big vehicles in small spaces.

Message: That's the first thing I thought Mike! I really like this idea and think it may catch on. Seems like it would really help getting into some tight parking spaces with a truck.

Message: There were several japanese cars that had this as a very expensive option in the early 90's. It never took off due to the price and complexity.

Message: It is a nice idea but a $3,500 option and 350 lbs of extra weight. Not worth the trade off in my book.

Message: I have riden in a mazda 626 with this feature. In that car I couldn't feel a difference. The rear wheels turned up to 6 degrees and proportionaly to the speed; the faster it went, the less the rear wheels turned.

Message: You better like the factory ride height and tire size as I bet it is really pricey to try and change! What I can't believe is how they make backing that trailer up look so easy. I really don't think this system would keep a trailer that straight while backing, and think the ad is misleading in that way.

Message: I noticed the boat backing up bit too. While I don't think this system would make it that easy, if it did in fact make such a difference I would really think about the option!

Message: Yeah, I know the boat backing bit must be staged, there's no way that the truck can sense how the trailer is going to track, IMO.

Message: Yep - saw that commercial. This isn't new technology. I remember well the 88 Mazda 626 with this option. You think you have ball-joint issues/concerns now --!!! Take all your front issues and double it with this set up.

Message: Yeah...
Check out the gas mileage figures, also. I think there is a penalty in using CV joints.
Wheel alignments will cost more, I'm guessing, as it will require a four-wheel alignment.
The "tighter turn radius" will be somewhat reduced due to the use of CV joints in the front and rear. I haven't checked lately, but I believe the turn radius was smaller on my 4x2 Dakota than the 4x4 Dakota, if I recall correctly. Have to limit the amount of travel on the steering for axles with CV joints.

Message: My 2000 RC R/T seems to turn in as small a radius as my old Neon would. It almost turns as sharp as the mailtrucks I drive but they are the tightest turning thing I have ever driven (besides a ATV or motorcycle I guess!) The new 4WD mailtrucks suck at tight turning and need a 3 point turn every time.
