Am I right by saying that engines run like crap when running on ethanol? I understand that there is a push to get more ethanol into fuel. I'm not against this for it has already been proven that this will help clean up our air. But is there a way to modify or build an engine that will run better on ethanol without losing power or performance? I ask this because those who are pushing this legislation are asking for three times the amount that is put in now. So who knows the solution or where I might find an answer?

ok so I answered some of my own questions I think. According to a couple of web sites ( I went to Google and typed key words "ethanol performance") engines run better on ethanol but don't get as good of mpg because it burns quicker but cleaner. So why does my owners manuel say not to run ethanol mixes? Alot of pumps already run E10. Someone enlighten me.

What year truck do you have?? I don't recall ever seeing in my owners manual not to run ethanol. But you might have answered your own question again. Ethanol does burn hotter and cleaner whih woudl increase the risk of detonation. I wouldn't really say you get better performance from it either. It depends on the vehicle. I have generally gotten better gas mileage running ethanol blended fuel in my truck. And it seemed to run better. Could be because it was actually burning more of the fuel and I wasn't running as rich.

I have a 4.7L. I think it was in the manuel. Doesn't ethanol run better in higher compression engines though? I could be going on about nothing here...I don't think much ethanol is mixed in south Florida

A little off the subject but I read an article in Motor Trend about alternate fuels.
It actually produces MORE pollution per gallon to produce ethanol than gasoline b/c of all the farming equipment to grow the corn and all the trucking involved.

how could it be more pollution? the field is
growing corn anyway. the farm is not letting
the field sit waiting for the need. and barge
traffic is moving grain up and down our rivers
anyway. insteed of going overseas use it to mix
in fuel. just think of the pollution the tankers
make bring crude oil from overseas, compaired
to the much small disel engine in a tracter in
a 1000 acer field. planting and combineing maybe
take 300 gallons of disel give or take a few.
cost or not the the oil is limited by the amount
of it, whereas ethanol coming from corn can be
reproduceable by the amount of land avliable. in
a sence growing fuel. \
in a few years will probably be racing our
electric cars anyway (or trucks) lol!

Well some of the convention thoughts just go out the window in that enviroment. HEHE I just got a KN air filter for my oh wait not air intake damn.... But you could still use convention under pullies though less effective, you could up the volts the moter would then turn fast but be less relieable and die if too much is used. When we go to electric either the car companies are gonna be really ghetto and gimp all cars or they will about become very close in power as the cost for the consumers to have big eninges will go down.

Here is a bit of info during the Gas shortage, some farmers made there own fuel. This was years ago using a very crude method, I am sure there are much more efficient processes for making ethanol. So how would it make more pollution if they use the same clean burning fuel?? Do you know what Indy cars burn?? Ethanol so what makes you think it would give you less power. Those engines are made for the fuel. Our engines may require some modification to run pure ethanol. Can you imagine if the United States wasn’t dependent on crude oil?? All the money that would be saved in foreign aid, subsides, bribes, and wars. It may cost more per gallon but what do you think will happen to fossil fuel prices anyway? Why not start saving our selves now instead of when we have no choice. If the oil companies stop worrying about loosing money and just buy land and farm. They wouldn’t there income. It amazes me to see the simplest answer to most of the world’s energy problems is something that has been around for along time. We hold the worlds market on farming why aren’t we using the resource. Ok I think I have deviated from the subject. Well my apologies for ranting. Think I am wrong or want to add anything let me know. On a side note there was one oil company that has or is constructing the world’s biggest ethanol refinery. I don’t remember who anyone know?
