Subject: Overheating problems IP: Logged
Message: My 99 318 overheated last week so i decided to change the thermostat. It helped a little but I still overheated. I checked the fan clutch and decided to replace it. That didnt even work. My next step is to replace the water pump. My question is how can I tell if the pump is no longer working? It isnt leaking out the weep holes. Nor is it making and noise. What else could be causeing my problems? The only non-stock items I have installed is a MP PCM, and a 210/220 cam .

Message: Try adding water wetter from Redline or Purple Ice from .... I forgot the name, but anyway they help keep the system cooler. Also, change and flush the rad and the rest of the cooling system.
Hopefully

Message: Hey Brian, how many miles on the truck??? It still could be the water pump event though there is no external leakage. The impeller may be chewed up and there is no way of finding this out without removal.
Hope this helps!!!!!

Message: Couldn't you remove radiator cap while cold, then look to see if water is circulating as you bring it up to temp. ?

Message: I'm not familiar with your radiator setup but if you can see into the filler neck, as mentioned above, you can tell if the water is circulating by watching it in the neck. Since you have the pump off go ahead and replace it. If you don't see strong circulation with all new parts the radiator may be clogged from not being flushed and cleaned each year. When checking for circulation do not fill the radiator to full. The water should be shooting thru the tubes.

Message: First, how do you know it really is overheating? If it is boiling over and spilling its guts, it is overheating. I hope you haven't done all this work just to find out you have a temp. sensor or guage indicating incorrectly. First rule of trouble shooting, CHECK the obvious, second rule, is DO the easy things first. You did one of the easy, the thermostat. Most cars don't even need a fan at speed, just at idle. So if it was not hot at speed, the fan isn't the problem. I can't see the radiator being clogged in only 3 years. We need more info.

Message: Are you loosing just some or all of your water..?
Is foaming or bubbling in the radiator..?
Is your timing highly advanced..?
If you check your plugs, is one or more super clean as compared to the others..?

Message: Brian....Sounds pretty serious. Try it without the thermostat. If you aren't losing water unless it boils over (overheated) it is not the head gasket. If you have foaming or bubbling in the radiator neck while running or right after, it would be a leak on the head gasket around an exhaust valve and make the water "boil" out so to say even when the water isn't overheated.

Message: Check your radiator. Look inside an make sure it looks clean and not crusty. Make sure your radiator cap is good. If your system is not pressurizing correctly, it will overheat. Lastly, buy one of those Prestone coolant testers. Make sure you have a good ratio. 50/50 is good in cool climates. 40% coolant, 60% water is better in warmer climates. Remember that water is the actual cooling medium. Coolant just prevents the water from boiling or freezing.
You might also try plugging your factory PCM in to see if it isn't a timing problem with the MP PCM. Good Luck..
