Message: OK anyone notice this before? This in both the 2001 and 2002 factory brochures:
"Dakota proudly boasts best-in-class available towing and payload*."
"*4x2 regular cab models, when properly equipped."
Ok, so lets go over to the options page.
"Trailer Tow Group(13)"
"(13) Not available with 2.5L I-4 engine or 4x2 regular cab models."
I'm really confused now! Dodge advertises the Dakota as best-in-class towing, but the Trailer Tow Group isn't available as an factory option!

Message: The only things the trailer tow group has in it is the hitch and the wiring harness. Both are avaliable from the Mopar acessories catalog. Why they won't put them on a RC 2wd from the factory is beyond me. but the 2wd, RC, 4.7, 5-speed, with payload package can tow more (6700 pounds) then any other Dakota combination.

Message: Why would you want to pull anything w/ a I-4?
Seams like anyone that would want to pull anything would want to pull it with at least a v6.

Message: Knobbyman you missed the point of what I was trying to say. You can't get a trailer tow pkg with ANY reg cab 4x2, no matter what the engine, yet Dodge advertises:
"Dakota proudly boasts best-in-class available towing and payload*."
"*4x2 regular cab models, when properly equipped."
It's almost like false advertising!
Hersbird, you are absolutely right. The combination that I happen to have will tow the most out of any Dakota. I already have the H.D. service group and just need to get the hitch and wiring.

Message: Guess I misread .. what are you looking at then? The "*4x2 regular cab models, when properly equipped." line?
You could weigh it.. like.. a Ranger w/ a v6 & that has the trailer tow package.. and then the Dodge w/ a I-4 w/o the tow package.. which is going to tow more? (I hope the ford) the point is.. With both Trucks properly equiped the Dodge pulls more.

Message: Just because you don't have the trailer tow group doesn't mean the truck can't still tow "when properly equipt". Just because Dodge doesn't "properly equip" from the factory doeswn't mean it can't tow.

Message: Someone asked why you would want to tow anything with a 4 cylinder. Well to date I have towed a HMV(Hummer), Suburban, Bronco, about 25 4.0 Rangers, 2 Chevy Z71's and a compact car with a 4 cylinder. Ya I had to put it in 4 low a few times to get things moveing but I have only failed twice to get a vechile unstuck. I will admit a small 4 cylinder is not ideal for towing but you have to use what ya got. I see alot worse combintions to two with towing things. Heck I see alot of front wheel drive cars with trailer hitchs??? I have even seen a Corvete with a trailer hitch towing boats and jet ski's!! I think it is. Of course that moron with the vette had to light the tires up leaveing the car was with jet ski's in tow. He was doing about 90 MPH with the jet ski's jumping around like a couple of 3 year old boys. These things were gettin Michael Jordan style hang time with each bump in the road!!!!

Message: The biggest thing I find strange in the brochure is that they devote an entire two page spread to the leather bench seats, and they're not even available as an option...
I just ordered my 02QC last friday, and loved the way the leather bench seats looked, but when they went to put the order into the system, the seats never came up as an option... they checked it out, and it turns out they're not available...
Oh, well, whenever they do decide to offer them, I'll have to swap the buckets out...

Message: Ike, did you read the little asterix in the options listing? It says "late availability" for the leather bench seats. I like those seats. I wonder how much $$ they would be to retrofit into my Dak?
HSKR, you are right. Like I said, it is just kind of strange of strange that Dodge makes the towing boasts yet doesn't offer the trailer tow pkg for the 4x2 reg cab. I'm going to keep it all Mopar and pay too much for the hitch. LOL.

Message: You will probably find, as I have with my '01 Quad Cab... That the Bench seats are identical to the bucket seats with the exception of the console being replaced by a small jumpseat with fold down back. This jumpseat has its mounting "feet" or pads riveted to the mountings of the buckets to create a single removable "bench seat". I would think you could order the leather buckets, find a cloth jumpseat from someone who no longer uses it and have it leathered up just fine.
