Subject: Rear Brake Valve??
IP: Logged

Message:
The other week i had brake work done on my 87 dodge 4x4 dakota. It came out to be $518, parts and labor. my mechanic said he thinks i never had rear brakes, i had been stoping with my front ones. On the bill the is a "Rear Brake Valve" on the part list for $150, what kind of valve would cost this much, and is there such a thing? I had to have new brake line run to the front and rear brakes. Up front the tire was rubbin on the old brake line when i would turn.

Depending on your Dakota option package,
there is a special valve on the rear axle that senses when there is a load in the bed of the truck and changes the hydrolic pressure applied to the rear brakes.

When there is no load in the bed... the rear brakes are virtually disabled. When loaded... a lever from the bed to the rear axle activates the valve and allows the rear brakes to do more work.

I guess this valve could go bad if you rairly carry a load.

I hardly ever put a load in the truck, i dont really have anything to carry. So, im still not sure about it. Its all said and done with now, and my trucks stops, thats the main objective, for now.

I would guess he would be talking about the proportioning (sp) valve. It is what decides how much braking goes to the rear.

I had a similar load actuated valve in Toy p-up, it was adjustable with a nut on a threaded rod, yours may be too. Have a friend watch your truck at slow speed while you stab the breaks hard - front and back wheels should both lock up at same time, adjust until they do. This is a simple system, extra weight pushes down rod to open valve more when carrying weight. You should still have some rear brakes when bed is empty or some day the ass end might pass you in a panic stop. A funky feature of this type system is when you hit a big bump while braking the rear senses a load which is not really there and rear tires will chirp.

The only valve i know of in the dakotas of this body style is the conbination valve located under the drivers side floor board. Its a proportioning valve/pressure differential/metering valve assembly in the far back of these pickups is a antilock brake module that looks similiar to a vale assembly. He could be talking about that to. Im not sure if the 87s had this though
