OK guys, let me first explain what i've done, then i'll ask my question. I'm not exactly sure why i've done this, but oh well, whats done is done. I took out the factory air cleaner box that houses the filter, as well as the hose that goes to the top of the engine. I've replaced it instead with a round 10" K&N filter, mounted inside a air filter holder that was meant for a carbureted engine. I've got that screwed down to the top of the throttle body, using the existing stud from the factory part. So now it looks like the truck has got a carbureted engine, even though its a 97 with fuel injection. I can defenetly tell a difference in throttle response, and i've got more power now. So heres my question. I'm now getting less gas milege with the K&N setup. Is this because the engine is running better because it can breathe better, or because the new filter, which is about an inch and a half high by ten inches wide, actually smaller than the stock filter and in turn starving the engine of air? I know i'm cheap and all for not buying the real K&N setup, i guess i was just trying to save some money. Any thoughts?

When I change to a K&N my gas millage went down too. But after after a computer reset and 2000KM the millage is better than before.

Mileage goes down initially b/c we have to butt dyno our new modification. That filter is really a little too small for a performance application though.

When you guy's talk about computer ressetting, is it the dealer that does that or what? Do you go to your dealer and ask them to reset your computer because you put performance parts on it? does'nt that void the warranty?

To reset the computer you just unhook the battery for awhile some do it for 20 minutes others dont wait that long. Personally Id unhook it as long as convenient and then put it back together.

(1) The 10" filter is too small.
(2) Resetting the PCM requires a 15-second task:
(a) Disconnect NEG terminal on Battery
(b) Turn key to the START position and hold for 15-20 seconds (Bleeds left over energy from the system)
(c) Reconnect battery terminal (with key OFF)
(3) On OBD-II Systems, the PCM will learn within the first 50 miles but does require about 150-200 miles for a complete Short and Long-term Fuel trim. (Based on Air density via the IAT and pressure changes via the MAP.)
