Subject: Dealer "undercoating"?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've just ordered an '02 Dakota and was wondering if anyone here got the dealer applied "undercoating/sound-deadening" stuff they try to sell you. It didn't sound like much but I thought I'd ask around for experienced opinions. Any comments good or bad? Thanks.

I got my '99 done at the dealer as well as the "lifetime" rustproofing. Ran me about $450CDN but i think it's worth it.

I had it done on my Acura for the noise insulation but the Dakotas are pretty quiet. If you live in areas where they salt the road in the winter it might be useful. Also depends on how long you plan on having the truck. If only for a few years then you are going to sell, I would save your cash. I live in Washington state and it isn't really worth it here. Besides...you can have it done other places for much cheaper: the dealer makes tons of money on this. And don't get the paint sealer either, its useless. Brother is an Autobody painter and says the sealers don't do a thing, the just use a wax basically.

You can apply ruberized non-hardening undercoating yourself to deaden noise. Mask of everything under the truck with butchers paper or tinfoil... I did this to one of my trucks in 1993 in GA before moveing back to MI. and it is still perfect all these years latter.

With my 2002 came all the undercoating and paint/interior treatment. I was at the dealer when a sale went bad and I picked up on the conversation and made an offer to buy the truck right then. If I was to order one I would not get the extra stuff they try to sell you. I had to get a professional detailer to buff out all the swirl marks from them adding the paint treatment. The undercoating can be done allot cheaper.

I undercoat / paint seal / fabric protect cars for my job. Dodgedogjb is right, dealers charge a lot, but they also usually have nice warranties to come along with the package. The paint seal is not a necessity, as it is almost a wax and, despite what they say, it will not last a year. The fabric protection, you can do yourself (with a bottle of scotch guard from walmart).

I wouldn't reccomend undercoating yourself, however, for a number of reasons: It gets real messy under there sometimes. Unless you have a nice lift, you're not going to be able to get all the hard to reach places (I know you think you can, but trust me, you can't). The clear rustproofing that is sprayed in the doors and behind the tail lights is just as important (and you need expensive tools to get it in there the right way). And the professionals know exactly where to put it, and where not to put it.

I did mine, and the only thing I didn't do was the engine compartment. That basically consists of a bunch of clear rustproofing sprayed all over the sides, back, and front of the engine compartment (which looks like complete crap a week later when it turns black and looks like grime caked all over). So I would ask them to skip that part.

Rustproofing -- and whatever else the dealer is trying to "unload" on you (i.e. anti-theft devices, extended warranties, Scotchguarding the interior, etc.) is all a complete "bull$hit package." You do not need "rustproofing" -- trust me. Tell your dealer this is 2002, not 1965 when cars were made of rust-producing sheet metal!
Please read the fine lines of your standard vehicle warranty. I believe you are protected from rust for the life of the vehicle! If putting $800 in the hands of the dealer makes you feel better -- so be it, however, I know for a fact a local "rustproofer" charges $80 for a $5 underbody rustproofing treatment. Up the road at the dealer -- same thing -- $800. -- Jim

One other item -- if it's on the sticker (i.e. RUSTPROOFING -- $XXX Dollars --- tell them you don't want it!). That's an INSTANT $XXX right in their nasty little pockets! - Jim

I figured the paint protection thing was just an expensive coat of wax but I wasn't sure about the undercoating. It was only $99 which seems pretty cheap for a dealer to offer. I was thinking about just doing the rubberized spray stuff myself (Dad has lift and does some undercoating). Here in the Phili area we don't get much road salt so it's not a big deal right now. Thanks for all the input.

Clean and dry. Went back to dealer and personaly
supervised the redo used a cop flashlight. The tech
was real embarrased.Spent 2 hrs. If you get this
stuff done, check their work.

My friend had the paint treatment down on his car. for days after he washed it the painted has really milky looking...not good on a black car.
ten dollars worth of scotchguard and an hour of your time will save you the 200-400 the dealerships charge for cloth protection.
my dealer offered to apply a warranted sealer to my dash...for 350 dollars. i asked them what they used, they said " a special wax"...hmmm...dunno...armor all, maybe?
as for undercoating, that is about the only useful option you can get, but only if it is necessary in your area due to salt. all the other stuff is just to lightne your wallet.

I use the AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector on the underside of ALL of my vehicles.
I live where they salt the highways in the winter and if I do not apply this product the whole underside starts rusting in a couple of years.
Three cans will coat everything and it cost me about $20.00
Keep in mind that if you apply the AMSOIL H.D. Metal Protector that you need to do it before the bottom side starts rusting.
You can spray it all over the underside including the driveshaft and it will not hurt one thing.

What everyone said is correct. The "paint sealers" "fabric protectors" are all things you can and should do yourself. I can purchase a very nice floor jack and 4 jack stands and rustproof my car and still have $700 left in my wallet...lol. This is typical of dealerships.
If you are lazy, then by all means pay the money.

Another thing I should warn you about. NEVER let a dealer wax or detail the vehicle. This is the most important part of "paint preservation". Typically they throw some cheap wax on. Well the wax seals in any debris left on the car from transporting and rail yards. Your best bet is to find a reputable professional detailer or bodyshop who can wetsand/prep the vehicle correctly, if youre not capable. Wax is icing on the cake, but you need a cake to put the icing on...if you get my point.
You cant see the "orange peel" thats common on all factory paint jobs on my truck. It took me a whole weekend to prep the vehicle. It was worth it though, because in 15yrs it will still look better than new!
