Subject: auto trans ticking noise? IP: Logged
Message: Noticed that when shifting from park to reverse, and then to drive, there is a ticking noise from under the hood. Goes away within a couple of seconds of being put in gear, but seems very odd. The car is a 2001 4.7l, multispeed auto trans. quad cab.

Message: All recent Chrysler automatic transmissions do this. It is completely normal, but only for Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth automatics. It is something in the design of a pump in the transmission. If your transmission didn't make this noise, that would be a problem...your transmission would likely be stuck in one gear because of a malfunctioning pump. If you don't buy that it is normal, listen to any other Chrysler product as it pulls up to a stop light. You'll be able to hear the ticking/buzzing sound as the transmission shifts down into 1st gear. The pump actually makes the noise anytime the transmission changes gears, but it is usually only heard at very low speeds because road noise drowns out the sound at anything above about 15 mph.
