Subject: Fire Call! IP: Logged
Message: Today, one of my buddies sitting next to me got a call from the local fire department (volunteer fire department), so he asked me to drive him. We just missed the fire truck so I had to drive him to the fire (25Km away). I was suprized at how quick I can get up to a good speed (so was he). We were cruizing down the highway going about 150-160KM/h, when I had to pass somebody, I floored it and when I looked down again I was going about 173kn/h (110MPH). The governor had not slowed me down yet, I had to slow down because of a corner, also at 170km/h I was only going about 3000rpm! I thought that the 2WD dakotas were limited to 110mph max (R/T), but mine is a 4X4 with the wheel & handling package, the truck was really twitchy at that speed though. When I got out my tires were about 20 degrees celcius (room temperature). I was going that fast, I was catching the Ambulance that I was following! Man are these 4.7's fast!

Message: They are limited closer to 120mph. Mine shuts down just before 190kph. Still pulling good in fifth gear.

Message: Is it smart to drive to a fire like that? I think not. As a professional firefighter, I can tell you, more volunteers are killed driveing like idiots to the fire than those that are actually killed while fighting the fire. I'm not trying to start an argument, just passing along the truth of the matter. Shame on the volly that didn't caution you on the driving behaveour.

I sure have to agree with Howdy on that one. I spent 32 years as a Professional Firefighter and there is no emergency bad enough to go so fast that you endanger everyone else on the road to get there. Sure firetrucks and ambulances go fast and have to arrive in a few minutes but they still have to be kept under control. Remember guys, if you see flashing reds coming up behind you, pull over and STOP. Something you may not know is that Volunteer Firefighters responding to emergencies in there own vehicles have a flashing GREEN light on the front of there cars. You also have to yield the right of way to them also. Sorry for the long post, but I've seen way too much crap happen because people have no idea what to do when they see emergency vehicles coming.

Message: I think the most important part of that last post is when you pull over STOP!!! People think that by pulling over to the right but continuing at the same speed is good enough. That just means it takes longer for the emergency vehicles to get by you. So please STOP the next time the flashers come up on you.
P.S. It's the LAW!

Message: As a volunteer Captain on our Fire Dept. I can tell you that our S.O.P. is to allow our volunteers to drive no more than 10mph over the posted speed limit when responding to a call. If they go over that the cops can, and have stopped them and cited them. And anyone who is cited is placed on propbation from the department. If you crash going to the scene you not only don't help those you're responding to, you create another emergency for your fellow firefighters.

Message: I know that it could have been dangerous, but I was very cautious, I only passed on a double line, and obeyed all other road laws except speed limit.
Hey, I got a free tank of gas for driving him though. :)

Message: Just 4 days ago I was saying how important it is to yield right of way to emergency vehicles. Yesterday morning, just a couple miles from my house, a police car was responding to a break and enter call when another vehicle started to enter the intersection. They collided and the police car hit a hydro pole and killed a 31 year old female police officer. It hasn't been determined yet who had the green lite, but I suppose that doesn't really matter right now.

Message: what you forgot to mention LEWNDI is that the female office was thrown from the car. If she'd had her seatbelt on like she should've she would probably be alive right now.

Message: Seat belts save lives! Thats pretty sad about the police officer, as a public servant myself(firefighter), means even more. :-(

Just to keep the record straight, the officer that was thrown from the car was the driver and he is going to live, tho he is badly injured. The lady officer was in the passenger seat and that was the part of the car that hit the pole. She was still in the car when it was removed to the morgue.
