so what exactly is the difference in 4lo vice 4hi? i mean does it actually change the ratio to the rear? or just put more power to the front? I'd appreciate an in depth explanatiion.

In a nut shell, traction & pulling power. 4HI is what you would typically be driving in if you wanted to use 4 wheel drive and drive highway speeds. Great for snow and the sort. 4LO gives you additional traction and pulling power (more so than 4HI). However, if you read the owner's manual (if you have one), it shouldn't be used for speeds in excess of 25 mph. It is better in real icy conditions where the ultimate in traction is required. Just don't drive highway speeds in 4LO. I hope this helps.

The difference is when you put your truck in 4-Hi the transfer case engages to provide power to the front wheels with the same final drive gear ratio as 2-Hi. When you put your truck in 4-Lo the transfer case engages and reduces your final drive ratio to provide more power to your drivetrain. It changes/reduces the ratio to all four wheels. Use 4-Lo with caution and at low speeds because the extra power can break things in a hurry. Also if you have an automatic trans it has to be in neutral with the truck stopped before the transfer case will shift into 4-Lo. I assume it's the same shifting with standard transmissions also. Hope this helps.

BlackDak is right in assuming it's the same with a standard tranny (in neutral/clutch in...whatever). Though you can be moving at 2-3 mph (rolling slightly) when you shift from 4HI to 4LO, stopping is the best policy. If you are going that slow to begin with, might as well just stop the truck before you shift.

My dealer told me when I picked up my 2001 Dak that I should be rolling around 1 mph to engage the 4LO. I have always stopped when I do it, however, i think I have only done it once and that was when I just trying it out for fun.

Yes, slight rolling forward will help the transfer gears mesh when into or out of 4low. 4low is not for going fast or far. As mentioned above, it's possible to break things due to the extra torque applied to the drive line.
