Subject: Ever seen this one? IP: Logged
Message: I took my truck for an oil change last summer and as always asked the garage to check the front end.
They tell me my left lower ball-joint needs replacing so I go buy the part and bring it to them to change. A couple hours later I get a call from the garage telling me that there is nothing wrong with the ball-joint but instead the hole in the spindle where the lower ball sits is worn.
Anyone ever seen or heard of this before?
Steph.

Message: Somehow the nut that retains the balljoint must have worked itself loose and egged out the hole in the spindle. It's a 'castle' nut with slots cut in it for the cotter pin retainer that is supposed to prevent this from happening. I've seen it happen and usually the best way to fix it is to replace both the spindle and the ball joint because both parts are probably damaged. Expensive but necessary to avoid future problems, IMO.
