Subject: Broken Ball Joint!
IP: Logged

Message:
Driving my 91 2WD Dak today. About 15MPH turned a corner and the steering let go with a bang, followed by a loud scaping sound on the road. A broken ball joint! Glad this didn't happen at 65 !!!!! Would have been rollover time.

I have never heard of a broken ball joint on a MODERN never-abused vehicle. Comments please...

Have to. No alternative. But have you seen a Non-accident related BROKEN ball joint in a recent production car? I haven't. Loose and worn ones, yes. BROKEN, no. Too Scary!

All I have to say is why didn't you notice something wrong before this happened? If the ball joint fell out of its socket there had to of been some warning.

I agree. Only a really worn joint will come out
of its socket. Every time you have the truck up
check to see how they are. Keep em lubed
too.

Did not fall of socket. It fractured and EXPLODED! Truck had regular dealer maintainance since new and a special safety inspection (by dealer) 3 months ago prior to change of (family) ownership. You tell me what happened.

Glad you are here to tell about it. Good thing you didn't swerve into oncoming traffic or roll into the ditch. Or, did you?

Mine broke too, did not come out of its socket. It happened at a spot where the road and beginning of a bridge met. It was an uneven spot and whamo..was pretty interesting for a few seconds, but no, did not roll, (that time).
Drove it home, but it was not pretty. Vettes are tough, (1972 vette).

The only thing I could see is that it was a defect from the manufacture. Can you tell me if it was a Moog or other type of premium ball-joint or some cheap jobber part? I would try and find out the brand, if possible, and write the company.
Steph.

It was a factory original, 11 years old. I checked the recall list and see there were some mid-90s Dodge recalls for bad ball joints on some vehicles, but my 1991 Dakota was not on the list.

Mine was just the stock ball joint that came on the vette, I just replaced them all and it drove much better anyway.

WORD FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER: Ball joint had stripped threads and let go. All else intact. Original Front end tight after 170,000 miles, and no further work is required. (Both ball joints replaced, one for damage, the other for precaution: $250.)
