Subject: Spray paint fender flares?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '93 Dakota Sport and I was wondering if I can spray paint the BADLY FADED stock plastic fender flares. Do they come off easily? Also, is there a certain kind of paint I should use? ANY info is appreciated.

Paint does not stick to plastic, rubber or fiberglass very well. You will need to use something to increase adhesion/bonding!

Flares should be easy to get off, and there are products available to help paint stick to plastic and other surfaces. After all, a good chunk of cars and trucks are made of plastic. Personally, if I were looking to color-match the flares to the body, I'd have a professional do it. It will cost a lot more than doing it yourself, but the results will likely be better than you can get with Krylon. If you're looking for a contrasting color and want to save some cash, do it yourself. I re-did my bumpers and grill myself...from 4 feet away it looks good, but up close you can see some imperfections. And I know that I will probably have to do touch-ups from time to time...just know that painted flares will get chipped quickly from rocks and anything else your tires kick up. Prep work is critical! i.e removing any surface coatings (wax, etc.) and making sure the surface is properly prepared to bond well with paint or plastic bonding agent.
