Message: Just read the thread from long ago regarding white foam in the oil filler neck. I have a 2001 4.7l q/c 4x4. I looked in the filler neck today, just pulled out the baffle and its loaded with white foam. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. They acknowledge the TSB on the problem, but the parts guy thought the baffle was supposed to prevent this. I fill you in when I know more.

Message: The fix to the problem is not a fix at all. All they do is block it so you cant see it.
Dont worry about the foam it does nothing bad for your truck. Just clean it the best you can at oil change time.
If you get the fix it will just make it harder to clean.

Message: WEll, I have the baffle too and all it does is hide the goop.
Problem is a plastic filler neck that does not conduct the heat necessary to boil off that stuff.
Pretty stupid design if you ask me.
A perfect example of beancounters being too involved in vehicle development.

Message: Dealer told me that the fix has already been done; new oil cap and baffle. The filler tube was full of white goo. Dealer said there is nothing else they can do. I didn't pay $35,000.00 for a truck that allows water into the oil. I'm placing a call to 1-800-4adodge right now. I'm in Canada and have been on hold for a while.

Lodge my complaint with DC, they gave me a file number and will contact me if there is a recall on this problem. This is Bull****. I urge everyone in Canada to check there oil filler tube/cap and report the problem. 4.7l q/c 4x4

Message: I have a 2001 Motorsports Edition Dodge Dakota w/the 287 (4.7). It is only driven on nice days and is always garaged when not in use. I drive it on average 20-40 miles a week. I use mobil 1 5w30 on all 3 dodge vehicles I own and fill them to manufacturer spec. and I have never had this problem on any of my vehicles. Personally, I would try using mobil 1 for 2 or 3 oil changes and see if the problem goes away. Both of my buddies that have the same motor have this problem and neither uses mobil 1.

Message: I use Mobil 1 5W-30 and noticed the white/yellow spooge on my most recent oil change. So goes that theory. I'm not too worried about it. I just wiped out the filler neck and the bottom of the cap and pressed on.

Message: The problem is caused by having the plastic filler neck. Because its plastic condensation gets in there during warm up and cool down. To get rid of the problem you need to plug the filler part and fill somewhere else. Or make an aluminum filler neck.
Using mobile 1 or any type of oil wont help because when oil mixs with water it turns bad. Yes mobile 1 may resist it but the water is still there. The amound of sluge you get depends on the temp out side and the amount of cold starts and cool down you have between oil change.
But there really isnt any reason to do anything. It stays in the filler neck and doesnt effect the engine at all. Just clean it out and be happy.

Message: You are almost correct... but not quite.
The oil/water emuslion builds up in the filler neck because the PCV valve is constantly pulling the vapors out of the crankcase into the filler neck. All engines exibit some condensation in the oil.. the 4.7L V8 hemi is just better at collecting it where you can see it.
Actually, making the filler-neck out of metal would make the problem MUCH WORSE! It is the cold air from the radiator fan that is cooling the filler neck and causing the watervapor to condense. The intent of the plastic filler neck was to INSULATE from that cold-air blast. It really needs MORE insulation so the condensation does not take place. (keep the heat in the vapor that the PCV valve is pulling into the fillerneck)
Try this... get one of those beer/soda can "sleeves" made out of foam that keep your beverage cold. Fit it upsidedown over the filler neck. The idea is to add MORE insulation to the filler neck so the heat is not lost from the watervapor. This will GREATLY improve the situation.

Message: You are dead wrong professor.
A metal filler neck will CONDUCT heat from the engine block. Plastic does not insulate it COOLS thats why they make air intakes out of plastic. Adding more insulation to the plastic will compound the cooling, ever heard of a cooler?
He's also the loon that insists you must run only 5W-30 oil in the 4.7L. This guy is a total crackpot.
