Subject: Soft Tonneau Cover which one? IP: Logged
Message: I'm interested in getting a soft tonneau cover for my Dakota. But which one do I get, fiberglass tonneau cover is not good for my needs but looks really nice. Snap tonneau covers tend to rip or tear at the edges after sometime.
I'm leaning towards the snapless cover, would this be a wise choice? Will the tarp last for a long time? What do you guys recommend for a good cover that comes off easily for loading? And it doesn't break the bank.
Thanks in advance
Anthony

Message: Depends where you live, I think.
I would not use a snapless cover in an area where it snows a lot. The weight of a heavy snowfall might not be supported by a J-channel. I do not find the snaps to be inconvenient.
I have an Extang soft cover on my bed. Looks great and is a nice thick vinyl cover. The frame is all metal (though plastic corners aren't necessarily bad). What I liked was that the snaps have a high and low setting. When it is cold in the winter, I can changed the snaps to accomodate the fact that the vinyl shrinks. I have no trouble removing the cover for heavy loads and putting it back on after unloading.

Message: As far as brands go, Extang seems to make the best products witha good warranty.
I have the snapless. I agree with you that when you see old ones, the snaps are always rusted or ripped(Dont know if the new ones are made better).
As far as heavy snowfalls, I live in Long Island New York and we get our fair share of snow and I never had a prob with the snapless coming off. Actually in the winter, the tarp shrinks so much that it is a very tight fit.
One piece of advice. If you dont have a heated shop and you live in cold weather climate, heat up the tarp (let it sit in you house) for a while before installing it. It is almost impossible to stretch it on when it is cold..

Message: Thanks guys for responding.
I live in Toronto Canada, where we do get our share of snow, but not enough to make a tonneau cover bend. That takes alot of force, in my opinion.
Extang states that their cover holds up to 1000 pounds. With the snapless design.
Has anyone else tried:
Lund Elite (snapless)
Lebra Rail Tonneau System (snapless)
Mopar Tonneau Cover (snapless)
Extang Tuff Tonno II (snapless)
What can you do to get these tarps in great shape?
Thank Again

Message: Don't most tonneau covers come with the support bows that run across the bed of the truck? I've got the snap kind on my Ford (can't remember off the top of my head which brand) and it has 3 bows that run across the bed under the cover.

Message: Go with extang I live in Toronto as well and go up to Sudbury quite abit. I have had over 2 feet on it no problem. The only problem I've had is the pastic from the bed liner on the tailgate freezing to the rear rail and not being able to get in the back for a few days. Any body Have a fix to the freezing?

Message: Anthony--I had Extang on my Rangers and I have one on my Dak.They are a very good cover, and if snow is a problem [for I live in Ohio and we have snow,no big deal, just clean it of with your snow brush]I think the snapless is hard to work with, the snap cover is a peace of cake to use.My opinion.

Message: I think I will go for the Extang tonneau cover, snapless model. Snow is no problem that doesn't take much to brush off like Bob said. I care more about the trap lasting a long time....
Thanks All

Message: Yeah, whats up with that "special cleaner"? They say not to use aftermarket protectors like Armorall or sonofagun. Is this just a ploy to sell their own product? I had a cover on my last pick up for 3 years and always used armor all and never had a prob.
