Message: I have an '87 Dakota, I took it in for brake work the other day, and noticed that my e.g.r. light on my dash has come on. What could be wrong with my egr valve to make this come on? I didnt even know it had an egr light. Thank ya for any help!!

Message: My 87 Dak did the same thing. There is a computer controller under the hood that does have a vacuum line running to it. I think when the EGR valve is malfunctioning the computer can sense it. I checked my EGR valve, valve gasket, and vacuum solenoid and all were good. So I'm thinking it may be a timing or mileage deal with the computer. My 87 Dak has 140K+ on it. The EGR valve is on the driver's side of the intake manifold. But, I drove my Dak for two years with the light on, didn't sense any problems or harm from it.

Message: Hi all.
Just had to let you know that the EGR lite is just a reminder lite that it is time to clean & test the EGR sys. There is a mileage counter module under the left lwr dash pnl. It has a 9v batt in it to remember the miles and a little hole that you stick a pin into to reset the light. Mine has been on 3x since I bought my truck ('87 3.9 auto 4X4, 160k+ miles) & the manual says it should lite up every 60k or so.
I did it one better & after the last reset I just tossed the batt. No more lite.
