Message: I recently purchased a 94 Dakota 4x4 SLT extended cab with a 318 V8. It is the first Dodge that I have owned in 20 years. I needed something that was very dependable because of my work, and I based my decision to purchase largely on the reliability the 318 used to have (hope it still does) and extensive conversation with the previous owner, even though I bought it from a 5-Star Dealer. If anyone has any info on things I should look out for (it has 90,000 miles), I would appreciate the info. Also, any tips on how to improve gas milage. Power is great, goodness knows it has plenty of power.

Message: I have a 95 4x4, the only item that has worn out was the drive chain in the NP231D transfer case. Because my truck spent 4 years driving in Colorado constantly in 4wheel drive and snow, the chain developed some slack, wore a groove in the tcase shell and destroyed the pads on the fork. Other than that, no failures, and nothing other than regular maintenance. I have 80100 miles.

Message: Thanks for the info. The transfer case has been rebuilt in mine also. The previous owner traded it for a new truck while it was at the dealer being rebuilt.

Message: I have put Autolite 3923 spark plugs in mine, helps with the pinging. Recently, I put ona 14x3" open air K&N filter, just barley fit but the throttle response is great. I have not gone a full tank with that yet so don't know the mpg gains are. I also bought a Mopar PCM but it has not come yet, that should help with the mpg.
When I get some time, I will probably do some work on by throttle body until I save up some more $ to buy a nice billet one.

Message: $300 for transfer case? This is quite amazing price. Anywhere I search, the remanufactured NP231 is around $1000 and up.

Message: At 90K you're well within the mileage where the intake belly pan gasket fails. If you see oily residue in the inside of the intake (look down through the throttle body), that's a clue, but you will have increased pinging and rough running when it begins to fail. There's an improved gasket that's available from the dealer, as well as the M1 intake, which doesn't have the gasket as all. The shortblock is as stout as ever. The heads are more prone to cracking because they share commonality with the 5.9. The old LA heads had more beef since the ports and valves were smaller, so they were less likely to crack than the 340/360 castings.
