Subject: Roll-n-Lock vs Advance tonneau IP: Logged
Message: I'm in need of a quality tonneau for my new
Quad Cab. Anyway, I've narrowed my choices
down to the Roll-n-Lock and Advance two
panel folding tonneau. My observations:
ROLL-N-LOCK
Pros:
*Looks much smoother that the Advance
*Stays with the truck at all times
*It seems like you get more for your money
when compared to the Advance
*Doesn't dent
Cons:
*Takes up bed space(canister and tracks)
*Lots of parts
*The track and/or canister could be damaged
if something fell over or slid into it
*Drain tube maintenance
*Possible future squeeks and rattles
ADVANCE FOLDING
Pros:
*Completely removable
*Light weight (35 vs 115 lbs for R-n-L)
*Doesn't use any bed space
*$125 less than R-n-L
*Awesome customer service from K-covers
Cons:
*Looks a bit like a shower door
*Weatherstrip attached to the tops of the bed
rails when cover is removed
*Questionable front latching mechanism
*Easy to dent
I'm leaning toward the Roll-n-Lock, but am
concerned about it working properly during the
Wisconsin winter. I'm also wondering how far
the roll up mechanism hangs down it the front.
Sorry for the long post, any thoughts/opinions
one way or the other would be much
appreciated.
Thanks,
Lemmers

Message: I had a pace-edwards roll-n-lock cover on my Ranger. I installed it myslef (it was used when I got it) I didn't have any problems with squeeks or rattles. Overall I liked the cover (much better than those stupid snap-on covers) I am not familiar with the other cover you are looking at but if you get the roll-n-lock I would suggest getting it installed vs installing it yourself. It took me quite a while to intall it and it was kind of a pain in the a**. Oh yea, the canaster hangs down aprox. 6-8 inches into the bed.

Message: I have a roll n lock on my short bed and I love it. The new ones aren't as strong as their old ones, but still formidable. It took me about 4 hours to install mine and has worked well ever since. It also put an end to passers by putting their trash in my bed. Unless you are really mechanicly inclined(stuborn) I would have it installed. There are just too many adjustment on it to get it perfectly alligned.

Message: Well, looking at your pros and cons of both tonneau covers, I'd say that the Advance Cover has more advantages than the Roll-N-Lock.
Several major reasons why I am buying the Advance Cover is because it doesn't take up any bed space, and won't be in need of major repair because after all, there are no mechanical things involved.
The canister in the Roll-N-Lock, however, CAN indeed malfuction if some small object or dust accumulate inside it. Also, the idea that the Roll-N-Lock consuming some bed space isn't exactly thrilling for truck owners with limited bed space, especially for those who own the Quad Cabs.
I'd say that the cons of the Roll-N-Lock looks pretty riskier than the cons of the Advance Cover. JMO....

Message: I've got the Advanced Cover on my 2001 QC 4x4. The cover is 2 sheets of aluminum with dense foam in between. It seems pretty dent resistant to me. Were you planning on throwing tools or bricks at it?? The front latch is a bit odd but works well. If they hid it the way they did in the back it would be near impossible to get at because of the cab. I don't like the look of the weather stripping on the bed rails when the cover is off either but it's rarely going to be off. Besides , that's the price for dryness. We recently had a heck of an ice storm here in Ontario. It entombed 100% of my truck in 1/4 inch of solid ice. A couple of solid wacks with my hand loosenen up the ice on the cover and it opened up , no problem. I do recommend some lock de-icer in the 2 key locks. Mine froze up a couple of times. (It was't locked during the storm I mentioned). I have no regrets with my decision. W.R.T. the roll-n-lock. I didn't like the extra cost, lost bed space and mechanical complexity. (more parts to break). I also have my doubts about it working properly when ice and snow are involved. The Advanced Cover is easy to install. I did it myself , and I'm not Joe Mechanic. E- mail me if you want installation tips..........Canadak
