Subject: Accessible 4x4? IP: Logged
Message: I've been looking for a 4x4 truck that will work for my wife who is a paraplegic in a wheelchair. It looks like the Dakotas are a little shorter than most stock 4x4 trucks. Her chair will raise up to about 30". Does anyone know what the height from the pavement to the passengar seat cushion is? I know I should go down to the dealer, I just want to know if it's even feasible first...
thanks

Message: My '02 is about 33- 34". But I have 16" rims, a 4x4 Dakota without the tire & handling package with the 15" rims might be in your range.

Message: I have been a paraplegic for 13 years now. (Thanks to a local hospital). I don't have a 4x4 but I bought the Quad Cab and had the front lowered 2" and the rear 3". The truck now sits level and the seat height is 30". I can easily transfer in and out and I store the wheelchair behind the passenger seat. I don't know anything about lowering a 4x4. I do know the Dodge is allot more truck than the S-10's I formally used.

Message: I've got a 2001 QC 4x4 4.7 with 15x7 factory rims and factory 235/75 R15 tires. It measures 32 inches to the pocket of the front seat cushion and 33 inches to the front edge of the seat. If you don't really need 4x4 maybe 2wd with LSD would give you what you're looking for in seat height. Good Luck

Message: Why not talk to your local dealer about this? I'm pretty sure they will be able to assist you in making your truck accessible for your wife. The Chrysler company have features available for the physically disabled and if I'm not mistaken, they will modify your truck free of charge to accomodate your wife.

Message: Thanks for all the helpful info...
I looked at a 94 4x4 Dakota the other day, they are a lot lower than the newer ones (but not as cool looking). I think it will work out just fine. Does anyone know if the pre 1997 Dakota's are reliable or have a bad maintenance record?
thanks again,
Eddy

Message: I had a 92 and a 94. Both were not bad matinance wise. Just minor items like a oil pan seal which was covered under warranty. the 94 should be better than the 92 because the engines had a chance to have the bugs worked out whereas in 92 the magnums were brand new. Good luck and see if you can get the $500 auto mobility cash back from the dealer. That is supposed to help out fit the truck for a wheel chair lift or other needed accessories.

Message: Eddy, I am in a wheelchair also. If you are looking at a 4X4, go with a model that does not have the tire and handling package (lower to the ground). Does your wife have decent upper body strength? The reason I ask is that she will need to be able to pull herself up into the cab somewhat. If she uses a transfer board, it is much easier to do. My first Dakota was a '97 4X4 without the taller tire package. I later bought a 2001 model with the taller tires after my upper body strength was greatly increased. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, The Dakota has been the best truck I have found as far as ergonomics are concerned.
