Subject: Road/Wind Noise 2002 Club Cab IP: Logged
Message: Hi all,
I have recently bought a 2002 club cab and I have a lot of wind/road noise coming fomr the back of my cab. Does anyone else have this? I have heard that it comes in through the exhaust vents on the back wall of the cab? At first it seemed like the noise was coming in through my side-back windows (I am 6'4 and when I drive my head is right next to the window). But now I think that maybe the noise is coming through the back wall or something... nevertheless, it is there! I took my truck to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with my windows... The sound is very loud.. and extremely annoying at any speed, and especially at highway speeds! Does anyone have a slution to this problem (aside from turning up the radio).
thanks
Ryan

Message: I have an '02 CC and I don't have any noise. If the noise is as loud as you describe, then the dealer should have the "solution" for the problem. I'd go back and take them for a ride & point out the noise so they could hear it for themselves before they "take you for a ride" with their BS, JMO.

Message: I have a Reg Cab 01 Dakota with the sliding rear window. The wind noise in mine is pretty high.
Two things that I know of effect that. One is the rear sliding window and two is if you have the vent shades on your windows. Before I put mine on, there wasn't much, but I just can't live without them.

Message: Hi guys, thanks for the ideas! I do have a sliding rear window, how exactly does it cause wind noise? When I bought my truck I enquired about this and they guaranteed me that the window would not create any wond noise at all!
I wish I had two Daokatas' then I could compare!
I think I will take the dealer for a ride! As suggested! Thanks!

Message: I have a 2002 Club Cab SLT with a sliding rear window, and haven't experienced any loud noise. Sure, it's a tad louder when you open up the rear window, but that's obvious...like saying it gets louder when you open up the regular windows. I've heard that the Weatherflectors (not the Auto Ventshades) are a lot more quiet.

Message: If the sliding rear window is making noise when it is closed then the window is not sealing and is defective, IMO.
If you have those tape-on ventshades on the door windows and drive down the road with the door window cracked they say that this creates a pretty bad racket also.
Ryan M, just tell the dealer that the only way to reproduce the noise is to go down the road so they can hear it for themself. You will be there at the same time so they won't be able to say that they didn't hear anything.

Message: I get the same noise on my '01 CC. Sounds like there's a window open in the back. I asked to have it checked at my last warranty visit, the technician labeled it as "normal". Soon as the weather warms up here I'm going to start taping off some things, like the seams on the sliding rear window and the perimeter of the rear vent windows, and see if things quiet down. If so, I'll know where to start adjusting things. As for the exhaust vents, I understand they are at the bottom rear of the cab--maybe can get at them through the underseat storage?? Will have to look. Seems like the QuadCabs are much quieter in this respect....
If you find a solution please post!

Message: I surely will, the noise coming through the back wall of my cab is so NOT NORMAL I dont care what the dealer says... it onestly sounds like there is a hole in my cab! I bought some dynamat extreme and as soon as the weather warms up a bit Im going to dynamat the back wall and window areas of my back seat.. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Message: I drove 4 Club Cabs the same day before buying one. After reading posts I was very alert for noise during my test drives. One had much greater wind noise than the other three. Above 35-40 mph it sounded like one of the windows was cracked open. Never did discover a reason. I think they all had the sliding rear window. Makes me think that the design is sound (no pun intended) but that the tolerances for fit and finish allow some pretty noisy cabs to escape from the factory.

Message: I just got my 2002 CC and noticed the other night when I had her on the tollway that it was very quiet in the cab except all the little cracks on the road seemed to be loud when I went over them. Just seemed to be coming from the floor in general and not specifically the windows or back. I do have a sliding window on the back. After reading earlier posts, is it possible the slider isn't seating or sealing? Maybe a seal or gasket is missing?

Message: I'm pretty sure it's not the sliding rear window. The sound in my club cab is definetly coming through the side window area. Just like failord said, it sounds like one of the windows is cracked open! I just wish the dealership could give me an honest answer aside from "that;s the way it is." I know it's not because I drove a 98 club cab at work for a year and dont remember any of these sounds echoing in from the back!

Message: I just bought an 02 CC with the sliding rear window. I have noticed road noise when I'm driving on the highways but it hasnt bothered me too much yet, probably cause I have the radio on loud enough to drown it out. But even with the radio off the noise doesnt seem to be loud to the point of being annoying.
Besides, I figure its a truck, its gonna be a little noisier than a car anyway.

Message: I have the same problem on my 2001 Dakota Quad Cab. I am sure the noise is generated from the wing windows. I can tell you something that did not work the way I tried but may work in a different manner. I tried to put an extra piece of weather stripping on the wing windows. Maybe the piece I tried was to think, but it made it worse. Maybe the dealer can install a thicker piece of factory weather stripping. ........

I have a 01 QC, and it's quiet as a Caddilac!
What the h*ll are 'wing windows', you mean the small ones stationary on the rear door?

Message: The only noise that mine has is due to a bad body work. Mine was wrecked before and on the stationary window of the driver side the frame of the door is bent so the window frame does not seat even; leaving a gap to the outside world. I know this does not answer any questions but I had to tell you the story so I can explain how I pinpointed the problem. First you have to tell someone else to drive, then with an estetoscope(like the one the doctors use to check your heart beat) or you can buy one at AutoZone that is desinged for automotive use. seat on the back and check around the windows, doors and floor. Do the same thing infront. I'm sure you are going to find that air leak. If you don't find anything, the is the normal noise of the big side mirrors that they put on the new daks. I took mine off just to experiment and it made a noticeable difference.
