Subject: Honda 3 wheeler question IP: Logged
Message: I have an old 70 cc Honda three wheeler that hasn't been started for years. I'm trying to get it running so I can sell it.
The only way I can get it started is to pull the spark plug wire off of the plug so that the spark has to jump from 1/2 to 1" from the wire to the plug. After it starts, I try to put the plug wire on the plug and the engine dies.
I have tried this several times and the only way it will start/run is to remove the plug wire. And ever time I put the plug wire on, it kills it.
Has anyone ever heard of this?
I have removed and cleaned the plug. And I have changed out the plug wire.
Sorry for the "off topic" post. However, I've read where many Dak owners haul their 4 wheelers and thought I might get some help here.
Thanks
Bill

Message: All I can tell you is that when you hold the plug wire away from the spark plug it gives you a hotter spark. It's an old trick to fire oil fouled plugs and some people used this on racing motorcycles (2 stroke). Maybe you have a bad coil or magneto (sic).

Message: Ok two things to try.
#1 Take the baffle out of the silencer and clean it good, it should be real sooted up.
or
#2 the cap has a resistor in it, and the plug may replace the cap and the plug with a non resistor one that should help

Message: I asked my father about it and he said there
could be a faulty ground. He also said that
there may be a crack in the spark plug ignition
wire cap. I hope this helps.

Message: Thanks for the replies.
The Honda mechanic suggested replacing the cap (said it might be cracked, Chris), said it would cost about three dollars.
Parts guy said $14.00!!
I bought it and will try it this weekend.
Thanks again.

Message: I had one of those. It never did that but closely related problem that was reoccuring was timing advance. It did some strange things when the timing was off just a little. Won't take long to check while you are working on it. Sorry, but I don't remember the adjusting details other than it is in the side cover (right I think) and you loosen 1 or 2 screws and then use a screwdriver in 2 aligning slots. One side is stationary and the other side is the plate with the points on it. You move that one to set it. It looks like you are adjusting points but I think it sets timing too. Darn Alzheimers ain't helping me none here.

Message: I just found a repair manual from my 3
wheeler. It said that the problem could be:
1. Weak CDI pulse generator.
2. Broken or shorted ignition coil.
3. Weak of faulty spark unit or pulse
generator.
You could try these few things if the cap
doesn't help.

Message: I installed the $14 spark plug cap and it didn't solve the problem.
When the engine is cold, I have to remove the spark plug cap to get it started. The more it runs, the better it runs. After it's warmed up, I can completely install the spark plug cap and it will not die. It still misses out, even after warming up.
Chris - What is the "pulse generator"? Sounds expensive....
Thanks

Message: The CDI (capacitor discharge ignition system)
is a solid state system that uses no breaker
points. It controls the engine stop switch,
ignition coil, and ignition switch. They are
about $50-$75 (estimate). I think it is located
somewhere between the handlebars and the
front part of the engine (that is where it was on
my brother's Honda 200X 3 wheeler). I hope
this helps you out more.

Message: hey
I have a question on the cdi for a honda 200x.
What kind of test can be preformed to test for the functioning of the unit?
The problem I have is getting spark. I have already tested the continuity of the coil and it's good.
Thanks

Message: replace your spokets and make sure the axel is tight so the chain cant come lose put the back end on jack stands and put it in neutral spin the tires or start it and idle it in gear use the foot brake lightly to ajust the speed so you can check every thing for a wobble and make sure its all tight even a little wobble or a bent or broken tooth can throw a chain. make sure the chain and sprokets are the same kind size as the original. go with side winder brand sprokets there the toughest out there
