Subject: Instrument Cluster Milage IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 Dakota Sport and am looking to replace the instrument cluster so that I have a Tach rather than a dummy light. I know from reading other posts that the milage is stored in the cluster and probably in other places such as the PCM. The question I have is can the milage in the new cluster be corrected to match the milage of the vehicle either at the dealer or by some combination of button pushes and key on's? I cant believe that any vehicle manufacturer would make it so easy to replace the cluster and odometer and change the milage (which I know is illegal) without a safeguard built in to possibly update the odometer occasionally to the correct milage of the vehicle. any information would be greatly appreciated.

Message: I haven't looked into this for a while, but last I heard was the only way to change the milage was to flash a chip on the odometer cluster. The one guy who did this, said he asked his dealor and he said they would NOT reprogram it. I asked one dealor if it was even possible to change the cluster out (before I found the guy who did it) and they said no. I would LOVE to have a tach instead of that HUGE gas meeter... I dont want to loose my low milage in the process...
