Message: Depends on what kind of off-roading and what you're looking to get out of going to 17 inch wheels. The high-end Range Rovers have either 17's or 18's and are very capable off road.
Going to 17's and keeping the overall tire diameter somewhere in the 31-33 inch range will shorten the tire sidewalls as compared to a 15 or 16 inch rim. Any time you shorten the sidewalls, three things generally happen: your vehicle's handling will feel more repsonsive on the road, you will generally get a somewhat harsher ride (shorter tire sidewalls = less sidewall flex = less ability to absorb small impacts such pavement with a rough surface texture), and you will have less of an ability to reduce your tire pressures to get through serious sand, mud, or rocks (again because of shorter sidewalls). Also you probably won't be able to find anything more aggressive than a mild all terrain or all season tire in the size you'd need, again because of the shorter sidewall. I'm guessing that you'd need something in the 265/60-17 range to keep the overall diameter relatively close to 31 inches so it would fit in the wheelwells.
So sure, you can put 17's on a 4X4. If you do mostly on-road driving or light off roading and you want better handling on the road, it might make sense. But if you're looking to do some rock crawling at Moab, forget it.

Message: well i dont really care about offroading all that much, so I'm gonna consider it.
just out of curiousity, how does lifting it affect its handling?

Message: Lifting will have a negative effect on handling, but really only in extreme situations. Anytime you raise the center of gravity of a vehicle the handling will suffer. But honestly, I haven't noticed a difference. I don't drive my truck like I would a sports car, so I don't notice the effects of a higher center of gravity. If I were trying to be like Phil Hill or Mario Andretti I would have bought an RT.

Message: yeah i dont think i would want to lift mine cause i take corners pretty hard sometimes. I kind of wish i did get an R/T or a 2wd 4.7 cause i hardly ever use my 4wd, id rather have more speed, V6's can't handle this kind of weight.

Message: you ca get the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R and the Dunlop Radial Mud Rover in the 265/70R17 size from www.tirerack.com. They should be about 31½ inches in diameter.

Message: Does anyone have pics of a 4X4 Dakota with R/T rims on it?
I'm curious to see how it looks, this idea has been floating around in my mind for sometime.
Thanks
